Teddy bear cancer foundation is a non-profit organization that provides financial and emotional support to families of children who have cancer living in santa barbara, ventura, and san luis obispo counties.
Teddy bear cancer foundation was founded in 2002 and provides financial and emotional support to families of children with cancer living in on the central coast of california, including santa barbara, ventura, and san luis obispo counties. Tbcfs services benefit families of children diagnosed with any form of cancer before age 18 and continue services until age 21. Our objective is to help maintain the financial and emotional health of the entire family unit during one of the most difficult experiences any family can go through. Financial support programs:direct financial assistance: families can apply for up to $5,000 for payment of rent or mortgage; auto loans, registration, insurance, and repairs; utility bills; medications and home care services not covered by insurance; counseling, and child care. Bills are paid directly by tbcf. Education support: to help families address learning problems that are a common side effect of chemotherapy, tbcf covers up to $1,500 for the cost of neuropsychological testing and up to $500 for tutoring by credentialed teachers. Critical needs: we offer free gas cards and hospital cafeteria gift certificates. Hotel accommodations: we offer free hotel accommodations to immediate family during an emergency or an unusually extended hospital stay. Funeral fund: when needed, we assist families with up to $4,000 for funeral arrangements. Emotional support programsfamily support groups - santa barbara: tbcf offers bilingual support groups facilitated by a licensed social worker, co-sponsored by the leukemia & lymphoma society. Families gain support from each other while participating in group discussions and activities. Ventura: in a joint collaboration with ventura county medical center pediatric hematology/oncology clinic, community memorial hospital cancer resource center, cancer support community, st. Johns cancer center of ventura county, leukemia & lymphoma society, and american cancer society, tbcf provides a support group for parents, as well as expressive art and discussion groups for the child with cancer and their siblings. Loss of child support group: with the assistance of a licensed therapist, this group helps parents process their grief in order to take steps toward healing. Moments in time: we offer special experiences to children, including surprise birthday parties in the hospital, meeting celebrities, or fun outings. Bear necessities: tbcf provides families items, such as furniture, appliances, clothing, or bedding, as well as diapers and wipes for families with little ones. Family fun events: we host social events, such as family fun days, and trips for children and their families throughout the year, such as excursions to sporting events. Tbcf also hosts cottage childrens hospitals annual pediatric holiday party, creating an opportunity for children in treatment and their siblings to visit with mr. & mrs. Clause, receive a gift, participate in activities and enjoy a lunch with their family. Care for the caretakers: being a caretaker of a child with cancer can be exhausting and isolating. This program focuses on the parents or guardians of children with cancer. Opportunities to build camaraderie among caretakers, such as mothers spa day, are offered annually, as are other experiences that are dedicated to rest and rejuvenation for parents of children that have cancer. Tbcf storytellers: each week, volunteers read stories to children in pediatrics at cottage hospital. We also offer free books and toys for the children to keep. Project holiday: each year, families are selected based on need to be part of project christmas, project turkey, project valentine and project easter bunny. Families receive holiday gifts, such as toys, games, and clothing; easter baskets and stuffed easter bunnies; christmas trees and decorations; pre-made thanksgiving dinners and grocery vouchers; and more! All items are provided by donors, put together by volunteers, and delivered to families homes or kids at the clinic who are receiving cancer treatment. Community outreach programbone marrow drives: in collaboration with be the match registry, we help coordinate bone marrow drives to benefit families in search of a match for their child.

This organization provides a life-line to so many families facing the heartbreaking challenge of a child with cancer.
