Issues: Human Services, Seniors

Location: 1935 County Road B2 W Ste 250 Roseville MN 55113 USA

Mission: Having access to affordable, nutritious food is a simple and basic need. It’s a need that many local elderly adults find difficult to meet because of age-related disability, lack of support systems and limited financial resources. Lack of reliable access to food can lead to loss of independence. Store To Door’s mission is to help seniors live independently and age with dignity. We accomplish this by providing regular personal contact and access to nutritious food for elderly adults who are physically unable to shop on their own. Hundreds of volunteers help provide regular phone check-ins, grocery shopping and delivery; SNAP benefits payment options and work with local food shelves to ensure that even the lowest income seniors have access to food. Through these services, we foster good nutrition and health, reduce isolation, and support independence among this rapidly growing population.
Results: The most important outcome of Store To Door's work is the independence that clients report as a result of receiving Store To Door services. Each year we survey all clients and hear back from hundreds of people who have benefited from services: "I have been using Store To Door service since my husband gave up driving in 2009. After his death in late 2009, I moved twice and was able to take Store To Door with me. Services continue to be helpful in every way." Frances N., age 91 “Store To Door has been so good to Mom. They actually go way to the back door, up the stairs and bring the groceries right into the kitchen!” --Daughter of a Store To Door client "I am very thankful to Store to Door for my groceries - ordering, selecting, and delivering as I cannot shop anymore." Barbara A., age 86 "I feel you are a very important service to me. I may not be able to stay in my home without Store To Door. Thank you very much." Marlene G., age 75 "I am 97 years old and can't get out, so I appreciate having the two deliveries a month." Frances L., age 97 "My health is improving since starting Store to Door." K.D., age 74

I have been a volunteer at Store to Door for approximately 10 years. I have been able to see first hand how this unique service enables senior citizens to be able to continue to live in their homes knowing that the grocery products that they want and need will be delivered in a timely fashion and at a reasonable cost. Personal experience has taught me that this kind of service is not available in most other locations . As a result, older adults are often forced to move to care facilities which are not only expensive but often not aligned with what their preference would be.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

working with a dedicated and capable staff and volunteers and meeting our clients from time to time to see how important the mission of this organization is.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

energetic, dedicated and capable.

I have been a Volunteer Order Taker with Store To Door for over 5 years, and I can't think of anything I do that is more gratifying. Every week my clients tell me how much they rely on Store To Door, and how they don't know what they would do without this service. For me, spending 2-3 hours on the phone every Wednesday is such a simple way to make a big difference in the lives of others.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

that my volunteer service is truly appreciated by the clients Store To Door serves as well as the staff at Store To Door. It feels good to know that you are appreciated.

I have been mostly an order taker and also a shopper for Store-to-Door for the past 6 years. As I always tell people as an order taker its one of the few volunteer jobs I can do in pajamas! Seriously I was drawn to Store-to-Door after caring for my mother during her chronic illness. I was able to shop for her, but was comforted to know there was an organization like Store-to-Door that existed if she had not been able. Store-to-Door not only helps the elderly maintain their indpendence it also gives caregivers a much needed break from one of their caregiver activities. I can't recommend this organization enough for both its mission to its customer and as a volunteer I am proud to be a part of providing this service.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

The lives of the clients I call every week for their order. They are so grateful for this service to help them remain independent.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

actually make an effort to let Caretakers know about this service as a way to help them cope with caretaker burnout.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Getting to clients over the years. You get to know a lot about their lives taking their grocery orders, and to nice conversations.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

all enthusastic and caring.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Reach out to all seniors starting I guess in the state of MN and set up similar services. Ecspecially in more remote, rural areas.

Ways to make it better...

This organization takes feedback on problems extremely well. When I report a problem I am satisfied with the efforts to resolve an issue for myself as volunteer or a client.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Funding like many non-profits and expanding its areas of service.

One thing I'd also say is that...

Sign up to be an order taker, every other week 3-4 clients taking orders and inputting them usually takes 2 - 2.5 hours "tops" and you can do it in your pajamas!

I have been a volunteer order taker now for Store to Door (S2D) for over 2 years now. I originally saw a piece on TV about them. I checked them out, one of the most important things for me was how much of budget was spent on the actual services and clients. Well it was on the order of $0.85 on the dollar. I started with 4 clients and worked my way up at one point to 12, I currently call 8 seniors. I think it takes so little time to do this, and to know you can make a real difference in their quality of life well that just adds to the joy of doing it!

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

stellar, kind, dedicated people of all ages.

I have been a volunteer shopper with Store to Door for three months and find the experience very worthwhile. I learned about Store to Door from another volunteer and was impressed with its mission. My father died earlier this year and was able to stay in his own home until that time. I came to realize how important this was to him and his self-esteem. If my volunteering with Store to Door can enable others to continue living in their homes, then I'm more than happy to do it. Besides the satisfaction is provides in giving something back to the community, I find I learn a lot about what products are available in the stores we shop. It can be very challenging to find some of the items requested and the sense of accomplishment is also a reward. This volunteer experience has made me a better shopper for my own personal needs. What a plus! I'm a strong believer in what Store to Door does and am a donor as well.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the number of clients whose groceries are obtained and delivered every week.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

knowing what I'm doing is having a direct impact on making it easier for someone to continue living in his/her home.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

outgoing, capable, and helpful.
