Nonprofit Overview

Mission: The goal of StepStone is to help women and children who have been victims of domestic violence find security, self-sufficiency and a life free of fear and abuse. This is achieved through providing safe, affordable housing; support services; and advocacy for these women and their children.

Results: We have served 680 women and children in our 15 homes since 1996.

Target demographics: Women and children in South-Central Kansas

Geographic areas served: South Central Kansas

Programs: In addition to housing, StepStone provides support services such as budget counseling, life skills training, guidance on personal boundaries and healthy relationships, educational and career goal-setting, and parenting skills training. Staff members also assist with advocacy, referral to community resources, and follow-up support. Assessment and counseling are provided to both women and children to help address the long-term effects of trauma associated with domestic violence. StepStone clients are encouraged to take advantage of other Dear Neighbor Ministries programs such as free income tax preparation assistance and participation in a food purchasing co-op.

I have given to StepStone over the past ten years and think it is a wonderful ministry. The ladies at St. Joseph of Wichita are wonderful and fully devoted to the cause of Christ. You cannot go wrong with giving to StepStone to help those less fortunate who need to see Christ in their lives.

StepStone preserves the dignity of a woman who has faced domestic violence while providing support as she transitions to a new life. Following her stay in a crisis shelter, she and her family are provided housing for up to two years as well as assistance in money management, getting job training, and personal/family counseling. This organization is the only one of its type in the state of Kansas.
StepStone owns and operates 15 homes in Wichita.

This program deserves an award. Look at all the women that have been abused in Kansas and how many they have helped.
The Help here is outstanding and unbelievable. The don't do it as a job they do it from the heart. Its very confidential and the staff there treat the women and children that come there like royal family. They take you in and wrap you in there arms and keep you safe and secure. This two-year program helped me become a strong independent woman and gave me the security I needed to take on this world with my kids. Love you stepstone. I know there are many more who love you too!
