Each year, thousands of people in our community come to St. Petersburg Free Clinic for assistance with basic needs including food, shelter, heath care, referrals and other basic services. As a weekly volunteer, I see people from all walks of life receive a helping hand from one of the Clinic's programs when they have no where else to turn. One gentleman in his nineties wrote, " Thank you for helping with my electric bill. I have terminal cancer and just want to stay warm. Your kindness and financial support with help me live out my last days in comfort." This is just one example of how a Clinic service can make life more bearable for a neighbor in need. And as a donor, I appreciate that donations are well spent to ensure that 90 cents of every dollar donated goes directly to client programs and services.

I have been a volunteer for the St. Petersburg Free Clinic for over 8 years, doing intake for the Medical Clinic. I am constantly impressed by the quality of care given to our patients both by paid staff members and by the volunteer doctors and nurses. Each patient is treated with concern and compassion and I believe every one feels better emotionally as well as physically when they leave the clinic. Many times, after receiving medical care, a person will get food or assistance from "We Help" which shares a waiting room. It is one stop shopping which is so necessary when a bus ride was necessary to get there. My church collects food each week and I am able to deliver this to the Food Bank when I report to my "job" each week. I always feel that our donation is appreciated. So many recipients have told me that they are so thankful for the Free Clinic. Without it, they don't know where they would go for help during their hard times. I am proud to be associated with such a fine organization.

The St Petersburg Free Clinic has 5 major programs providing basic needs: food, shelter and medical care. It provides these services very efficiently, but also treating each client with the greatest dignity. Donated funds are the lifeblood of the organization. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to make a difference, one person at a time.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I've seen and heard the tremendous appreciation of our clients. Mothers and fathers have food for their children. Homeless women have a fresh start and support toasted a new life.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Add money for dental services which are much needed in our community for those without the ability to pay.

The St. Petersburg Free Clinic focuses on meeting basic needs -- food, shelter and medical care. In my experience, The Free Clinic is a VERY good steward of its resources. Programs include a Food Bank serving the Clinic's programs and 50 other agencies, We Help (food pantry and other immediate assistance and referrals), the Free Clinic (ambulatory care and referrals for those who do not qualify for any other programs), Beacon House (men's shelter and transitional residence) and the Women's Residence (transitional housing and program for single women). Volunteers provide invaluable assistance in delivering all of the services of The Free Clinic. The staff is lean and effective. Community financial support has made each service possible for the many people in need. I would highly recommend support of this organization.

volunteering in the We Help program (food pantry) and serving on the Board of Trustees

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

The organization is very strong; I would only wish for capital funds to make much needed repairs or replacements to our buildings.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Volunteers, staff, and donated goods are all used judiciously to help those in real need. I feel strongly that my time and resources given are making a real difference in people's lives.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

The staff and volunteers are organized, knowledgable and committed. Many volunteers have been there for years and years.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Build new, more functional facilities for the Women's Residence, Beacon House (men's residence), Free Clinic and Food Bank.

Ways to make it better...

I can't imagine what would have made it better.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Given the needs of the poor and working poor in St. Petersburg, the possibilities for The Free Clinic to provide assistance tend to outstrip our resources. So, I think our biggest challenge will continue to be resources.

One thing I'd also say is that...

Our buildings are old and in need of constant repair. Capital funds to replace one or all of our buildings to be more functional would be terrific!
