Mission: The mission of the SPCA of Central Florida is "to promote responsible human behavior toward animals." The vision of the SPCA of Central Florida is "to no longer be needed." Tag line: "We''re your local humane society...saving pets lives since 1937."
Programs: Pet Food Xpress (PFX) serves the pets of seniors in Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties. Seniors are referred to PFX by our program partners - SENIORS FIRST, Osceola County Council on Aging, and Meals on Wheels, Etc.
Monthly, program volunteers deliver pet food, packaged by the SPCA/CFL staff and volunteers. All seniors are on fixed incomes. Seniors are better able to maintain their pets in their homes while providing them with proper nutrition and not their own food scraps. There is no charge for this pet food or its delivery.
PFX volunteers visit with the seniors, giving much needed company. Volunteers are able to identify specific pets' needs then followed up on by SPCA/CFL. The agency provides, free of charge, spay/neuter surgery and basic, but important, annual vaccinations. Other medical needs are provided at low or reduced cost.
Maintaining the health of a pet of a senior is also maintaining the health of the senior. These beloved pets become the sole companions of many of our community's seniors. As other loved ones are no longer available for companionship, pets become both family and friends.
Recently, the SPCA/CFL added an option for the senior to care for his/her pet in the event of death or incapacitation. Seniors are offered a "Custody Release Form" ensuring the pet will not be left to languish alone at home. Once notified, an SPCA staff member will arrange to pick up the pet and bring it to our agency to be cared for until a new, permanent, loving home can be found. There are 77 senior households and 160 pets served through PFX. Contact Helen@OrlandoPets.org.
