Mission: To encourage the study and advancement of social dance, its history and related arts.
Programs: Alma del tango teaching program focuses on the social style of argentine tango and the building of a dance community. This program serves approximately 500 students and is growing. During the year a new musicality program series and a monthly social dance were added, in addition to the program's weekly offering of levels 1, 2, 3, and 4 classes and a weekly tango practice,"practica". A monthly social dance, a "milonga", with live music is offered quarterly. The organization's website is updated regularly and provides educational material and resources for tango aficionados. We lease studio space which gives full time access for classes, practices, dances, filming, and special events. The studio has been fitted with theatrical lighting, a sound system and and theatrical curtains to hold theatrical and social events for the tango community at accessible prices
"tango magic" was performed in our studio theater with 35 cast and crew members in front of 6 sold out audiences, a total of 300 audience members in february. These annual student productions not only encourage artistic expression and the building of dance and performance skills but also serve to entertain, while educating the public about the codes, culture and customs of argentine tango. The alma del tango teaching program provides student support that includes rehearsal fees, professional choreography, discounted classes, and administrative support to make the productions possible.
alma video projects: (1) produced a dvd titled "tango magic" in 2014. This was a multi-camera project filmed over 3 live performances and edited into a full-length movie. Several online public media clips from the show were posted online. (2) commenced the review, preservation and online publication of archival video featuring tango con*fusion. (3) rehearsal video to dance troupe supported by alma del tango as a regular program. (4) filmed and produced online video of several visiting artists at alma del tango events. (5) continued to improve the lighting and video equipment used, as well as improving the skill of the videographers and editor. While there were occasional nominal stipends offered to workers on these projects, many hundreds of hours of uncompensated volunteer labor produced these pieces.
the women of tango con*fusion bend the gender-related customs of this century-old dance. As collaborative artists they explore the idiom of argentine tango beyond its traditional boundaries. Their repertoire spans the spectrum from slick-haired classic to feather-ruffling experimental, with argentine tango as the imperative backbone of the work. Tango con*fusion has created over 34 choreographies and performed in over 80 venues. This year a cultural exchange was formed between johana copes (buenos aires, argentina) and tango con*fusion (usa) to hold a "ladies tango festival" that is held in buenos aires in march and san francisco in sept.
