Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Homeless & Housing, Senior Citizens Housing & Retirement Communities, Seniors

Mission: To break the cycle of homelessness for the elderly, single parents with children, and persons with special needs through offering non-traditional permanent and transitional housing solutions, and programs and services that create independence, empowerment, and self-worth.

Programs: Group residence facilities house single women with small children and older adults. Through our partnership efforts, we are able to offer daycare, mental health counseling and life skills training. Adults have the opportunity to improve their education and employment skills, budget management, computer knowledge, and enhanced parenting skills. Children are enriched with after-school programs, monthly literacy programs and recreational, educational and social services. Transitional in setting, the goal of the program is for our families to become self-sufficient, stable and independent. We assisted 81 women and children and enjoy an 80% success rate.

destination home began december 2012 and ended september 2014 as a partnership between the city of dallas and dallas housing authority (dha) to provide rapid rehousing to homeless families and homeless senior citizens and disabled individuals using dha apartments. Clients have access to our food pantry, computer lab, donation room of clothing, shoes, etc. This program assisted 25 homesless single parent families and 10 homeless individuals in 2014.

homeshare facilitates arrangements between individuals in dallas county who have more housing than they need with people and/or families in need of housing. Services include careful screening, criminal background and reference checks, home visits, assistance with the housematch trial period and ongoing assistance to assure the success of the match, rematch assistance if needed, and information and referral to other services when appropriate. This program assisted 107 clients in 2014.

Drugs and domestic violence forced me and my two young sons to leave the comforts of our home town. Shared Housing held me and my two sons with housing and services during this difficult time. I know that this program helped me and continues to be important to me and my family. From the food pantry to back to school and the annual holiday parties - shared housing is family!
