I have learned so much about working with teenagers and using therapeutic methods to help them understand themselves and the world around them better. At Sasha Bruce, I've learned to help those seeking help understand their own competencies; it's incredible how few people believe they are enough. Through what I've learned in my work with the Youth-Led program, I have become such a well rounded person, and I have had the opportunity to learn about some incredible kids in Anacostia that most of the world doesn't care to look at.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the Youth-Led program at Ballou Senior High School, and seeing the difference in our kids that now have access to college prep, self-empowerment, and watching them discover their own self-worth.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

have less bureaucracy.

Without Sasha Bruce Youthwork, I might not even be alive today. I found the program through their website in July of 2009, shortly before I turned 18. At that point in my life I had been mentally and sexually abused for years by my stepfather. I'd dropped out of school and had no social life whatsoever. Upon entering Sasha Bruce Youthwork's Independent Living Program, I not only finished high school on the honor roll, but I received counseling, got my first job, learned valuable life skills, and was offered a full scholarship to Lincoln University. Without this non-profit and the incredible people who work for it, my life could have gone from bad to much, much worse. Sasha Bruce Youthwork isn't around for recognition or any honors and awards-- this program loves children, believes in children, and it shows.

their Independent Living Program.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

create a living arrangement for those moving out of the organization's residential homes, such as an apartment building. The residents would live as they would in any other complex, paying rent and utilities and so on. This would insure each client transitioning out of their other residential programs will have housing.

I am currently volunteering at Sasha Bruce Youthwork and love the atmosphere here! The people are nice and caring and go out of their way to help newcomers. I have been truly amazed at all the ways SBY works to help the community of Washington, DC. They have programs that focus on all different issues relating to homelessness so a child in need is bound to be able to receive help from one of our programs.

Sasha Bruce Youthwork is an incredible organization that works effectively with disadvantaged youth in Washington, DC. The kids come from broken homes, and have many of the problems that afflict urban inner city youth such as homelessness, dropping out of school, teen pregnancy etc. In the supportive environment created by the staff of SBY, these young people get a second chance to grow up as productive members of society.

I have visited one of the group homes and the main office and I am impressed by the work of SBY.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Make this a national organization that could be exported to other inner city environments where there are poor and troubled youth.

My experience with Sasha Bruce was really good. They welcomed me in a friendly, open way and introduced me to my job immediately so I could start working right away. I enjoyed the atmosphere over there conditioned by the nice people who work there and were really grateful for the job I was doing. I appreciate their work a lot and hope they will always have support from people, other organizations etc.
