Reviews for Sacred Heart Community Service

Rating: 5 stars

I volunteered with Sacred Heart for their La Mesa Verde project. La Mesa Verde builds urban vegetable gardens for families that were already receiving Sacred Hearts food donation services. This allows families to have easy access to fresh nutritious food and reduce their dependance and some of the expense of donating foods. After about an hour of training, I went with one other volunteer to a family's house, and the two of us along with the husband and wife of the house together built two gardens on their property including a drip irrigation system. They were pretty impressive gardens and I would've love to have had one myself. The family was very appreciative and it was a wonderful experience.

This is an outstanding organization with deep roots and a long history of serving the most vulnerable of the San Jose community.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

The faces of the deeply touched lives of poor people and volunteers I see leaving the building every time I’m here.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Keep it on the same track. They’re doing a great job!

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

working with individuals deeply committed to a larger vision of a community free from poverty by taking care of the needs of each individual who comes through the door.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Deeply committed who treat the customers and volunteers with loving and cheerful compassion, dignity and respect many don’t find in their daily interactions with others.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Reduce homelessness by providing more emergency assistance.

Ways to make it better...

It couldn’t have been better. The organization pays serious attention to the experiences of its volunteers, evidenced by the fact they have at least 150 volunteers in the building every single day.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Finding the time away from daily operations of serving people in immediate need in order to do the long-term grinding work to get decision makers in mainstream systems to make the necessary changes that would reduce poverty.

One thing I'd also say is that...

I encourage everyone to come and volunteer and see this place in action. It will change your life.

Sacred Heart Community Service is a wonderful organization. The breadth of services that they provide to the community is amazing. They really understand that in order for people to improve their own lives, they need to have their basic needs met, so they provide for peoples’ basic needs with food and clothing. But they also help people help themselves by providing job search assistance, housing assistance, computer classes, ESL classes, an after school program and case management. And they don’t charge the customer for anything. But just as important as the assistance that they provide, is the fact that they really make a concerted effort to treat the people that they serve in a dignified manner and without judgment. I work in the pantry handing out groceries. I am always truly touched when the customers say to me, “God bless you.” It is those instances that I reminded just how much the work that we are doing is needed, and how much it is appreciated. I feel really blessed to be able to help people in this way. It is how I personally put my faith into action and it makes me feel really connected to the people of San Jose.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

The faces of the people that we serve. I also know that many customers are able to make lasting changes in their lives as a result of the help that they get at Sacred Heart eliminating their need for further assistance.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The connection that I have made with the working poor of San Jose and having an opportunity to act on my faith.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Amazing! Chad and others in the Pantry are totally committed to the work done at Sacred Heart, and to providing a safe place for people to come to get their basic needs met.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Eliminate poverty in Santa Clara County.
