Issues: Children & Youth, Education

Location: 700 12th St, NW Ste 700 Washington DC 20005 USA

Mission: From the D.C. schools fewer than 30% of students go to college and only 9% graduate from college.  This leaves a vast majority of students unprepared for life in which 70% of jobs now require some form of postsecondary education.  Reach for College! believes all students should aim for some form of education beyond high school to have the best shot at life.  We believe all students can be successful with enough determination.  We believe it’s important to help low-income students because our society needs them to be educated, contributing members of their communities.  We all need their vibrancy, their caring hearts, and their good ideas.  Reach for College! was founded in 2005 by two urban educators who saw the need and created a highly successful means to help traditionally disadvantaged students over the obstacles to college.
Geographic areas served: Washington, DC, Prince George's County, Maryland, New York, New Jersey
Programs: The Reach for College! program and books, that were specially developed for our target population of low-income students who will likely be the first in their families to pursue postsecondary education, cover all of the college access and college preparation tasks. These include: -Career exploration and researching the educational path to chosen careers -SAT prep -College selection and application -Study skills and time-management -College-level reading and essay-writing -FAFSA/Financial aid and scholarship applications -Employability and interview skills -What to expect at college and how to successfully make the transition. In schools, the program is offered as a class that the student takes as part of his or her regular daily schedule. It is taught by a teacher at the school who has been trained by Reach for College! Frequent on-site classroom assistance is provided by Reach for College! to assure excellent implementation of the program. When community groups, such as churches, PTA's or other nonprofits want to use the Reach for College! curriculum and program, we tailor the program to meet their specific needs. Reach for College! offers its books and program to most schools for free, as funding allows. We typically match funding with community groups and churches who want to use the program.

I've supported RFC in their goal to increase College access to students in Washington DC and Prince Georges County Maryland. RFC leadership has developed a model that serves over 4000 High School students with very low overhead costs. As a frequent volunteer i've watched students grow and mature while participating in the program and I consider RFC a true asset to the students served.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the improvement in the academic performance of High School students.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the leadership's commitment to the success of the program.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Debra Insel Brenda Harvey Alisha Scruggs

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Revolutionize the way students are taught in under performing schools and send a lot more kids to College.

Reach For College is an outstanding non-profit organization. The organization's commitment to helping high school students matriculate to secondary education is evident in the high success rate for participants in the program. I am excited for the many high school students that will benefit from the Reach For College curriculum as the organization continues to grow.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

fully committed, energized and focused on continuing the success of Reach For College.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

significantly improve the number of high school students that advance into secondary education. The program has demonstrated a high degree of success already. This program can definitely scale with more funding.

The Reach for College Program is vital to supporting the educational needs of students who are pursuing university, technical, technology, or military careers. As a former teacher, this program enabled me to better assist and expose my students to an array of post high school opportunities they would not have adequately received. The support given to both my students and myself goes beyond the horizons of academic availability. I not only support this program, but I also encourage other teachers and school communities to "chect it out!"

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

action. I've had several students to complete the program and go on to various universities successfully.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

make sure it got media attention.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the materials and staff support given to both teachers and students. The workshops are a tremendous help, expanding the knowledge base of both teachers and students.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

enthusiastic, energetic, enriching experts, cooperative, encouraging, helpful, and very friendly.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

service an entire school district from elementary to high school. That way an array of students would benefit and be able to attend a university. I guarantee they would be better prepared to handle a four or five year university program.

Ways to make it better...

my school district was more in tune to the program.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

attitudes of administrators and funding.

One thing I'd also say is that...

to enjoy this program, one would have to be a participant.

This organization seems top-notch. I like the periodic updates, via a newsletter and e-mail messages, of progress and accomplishments. And, the success reported is astounding. Working in an area -- helping kids navigate the process for getting into college -- with a previously dismal record, Reach For College appears to have devised a formula that works. The organization works with teachers and students alike, and must breed a truly optimistic atmosphere, because the record of helping these kids succeed is truly noteworthy. Nearly all of my annual giving goes to Reach For College. I hope they are able to continue this vital work.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

seeing the successes on what must be a limited budget.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

expand its programs to numerous other school systems and continue getting deserving kids college educations.

I volunteered for Reach for College in Fall 2008 as a chaperone on a trip that took Washington DC high school students by chartered bus to visit George Washington University in DC. We spent the day touring the college, meeting with students and admissions administrators. We had lunch in a student-filled lunchroom. This was the first time many of the DC high school students on this college visit had gone on a college tour. Few, if any, students in our group had been to GWU in their home town. This was an exciting experience for everyone involved. I loved the opportunity to chat with DC high school students about their college and career dreams and to share the first campus visit experience. I look foward to going on future college visits with Reach for College! students.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

The college preparation, college applications and college attendance of Washington DC high school students who often are the first members of their families to go to college.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

keep expanding the adoption of this wonderful program in high school attended by underrepresented students.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The chance to directly and indirectly support high school students who may be the first members of their families to attend college.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Very gung ho!

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

become embedded in the entire DC school system, in the entire Prince Georges County MD school system, in other area school systems and beyond!

Ways to make it better...

there had been more volunteers.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

keeping and expanding funding to bring the program to more and more high school students.

One thing I'd also say is that...

My participation in Reach for College! has been very gratifying! I encourage other community members to donate resources and to become involved!

Reach for College stands out in a world of so many wonderful non-profits. They have developed a program honed over many years that provides intormation, training and support to help underpriveledged high school students get into and succeed in college. These are kids who would otherwise be very hard-pressed to get it. The passion and experience of this group is extremely inspriing. One by one, they give kids a chance. Every dollar is used more efficiently than I have ever seen at any other organization. I have no doubt that my investment of both money and time to this organization will pay huge dividends in the lives of these young people, and thereby to the community at large.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The short term investment results are immediate and quantifiable, but the effects of sending people to college who otherwise wouldn't get there last a lifetime, and continue to future generations.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Smart, incredibly dedicated, energetic, and determined to improve the lives of our nation's youth.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Provide support for thousands of kids to get to college that otherwise will have no shot.

Reach for College is an extraordinary organization. It truly fills a great need and in many ways saves lives. The concept is clear, the materials are great, and the organization operates with minimum staff, placing almost all the dollars into the program. It is run by a highly dedicated leadership who saw the need and did something about it. The program needs funds to spread the program across the US. A better investment cannot be found.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

many schools in Washington, D.C. and Maryland.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

truly dedicated, very hard working, and believe in their cause.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

it would start the program in other desperate communities needing their help.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

The Reach for College Curriculum at Potomac High School over the past year has made our college based advisory program extremely successful. The materials and additional resources have provided a wealth of information and educational opportunities for all grade levels. It has afforded Potomac High School students and advisors the opportunity of a lifetime!!

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

be a major asset to all schools across the country!!

The RFC! program has been an invaluable storehouse of information, materials, and many other educational opportunities for my students as they prepare for their college careers. Visiting speakers and mentors have inspired them, and college tours have provided a glimpse of what awaits them. The juniors, who took the Accuplacer test, are addressing their areas of academic need in order to gear up for college-level classes. Regular visits and power-point presentations by the RFC! educator have informed students about the process of selecting a college, applying for scholarships and financial aid, and preparing for college life. Through the Saturday Academy several of my students have been exposed to cultural events, historical sites, and other educational experiences. Through meetings and workshops RFC! has assisted me as I work with my students on their resume's, application essays, and critical reading and writing skills for the PSAT, SAT, and ACT. Weekly e-mail tips provide timely ideas and innovative teaching approaches. RFC! had indeed been a treasure chest for my students and for me. Nancy
