The baykeepers mission is to protect, preserve, and restore the ecological integrity and productivity of the hudson-raritan estuary--one of the most urban estuaries on the planet. Since 1989, the organization has served as a citizen advocate for the estuarys

Boat program operates two pumpout boats that travel throughout jamaica bay and raritan bay pumping out recreational boat sewage holding tanks, which improve water quality. The program also educates the public on the value of the estuary and patrols the waters for potential pollution violations.

the conservation program seeks to preserve remaining wildlife habitats in the hudson-raritan estuary through advocacy, land acquisition, innovative planning and ecological restoration.

the oyster program, a volunteer driven program in new jersey and new york, results in the restoration of hundreds of thousands of oysters to the estuary ecosystem allowing this keystone species to resume its natural role in cleansing the waterways.

Started in 1989, Baykeeper is the only bi-state conservation organization in New York and New Jersey that is using hard hitting advocacy, legal action against polluters, land conservation, and habitat restoration to create a more sustainable, equitable, and cleaner Estuary. As the founding executive director and now Board member, I have seen the organization take on challenges (that other larger organizations have given up on), and seen positive outcomes for the place, the people, and the environment. The Hackensack Meadowlands is a preserved vital natural resource as a result of Baykeeper's decades long advocacy.
