Mission: Our mission at Rainbow Acres is to provide a unique Christian community dedicated to improving the quality of life for adults with developmental disabilities by assisting each individual to achieve emotional, cognitive, physical, social, spiritual, and vocational growth to his/her fullest potential.
Programs: Rainbow Acres' program is to provide for the Ranchers' growth needs in several areas: mentally the Ranchers are encouraged to grow through classroom and computer developmental programs, through their workplace environment, and through interaction with staff. Social development is promoted through a family-style living environment, through participation in church activities, through numerous social venues such as dances, sports, etc. Vocational growth is made available through an every Rancher task list on campus, through off campus work opportunities for those who have the capabilities, and through computer programs. Physical growth is encouraged through participation in daily physical activities, through involvement in Special Olympics and in personal programs of exercise. Emotional growth is aided by close encounters with fellow Ranchers and staff in family responsibilities. Spiritual growth is encouraged in daily prayer, bible study, and praise activities, through weekly church services of Rancher choice, and through All Ranch Prayer and Praise biweekly meetings. Rainbow's reputation of caring community through family-style living is national. There are 80 Ranchers who take part in Rainbow's program. They range in age from 18 to 77 years old and are from all parts of the country, though most are from the Southwest. Rainbow Acres is a permanent home for most of the Ranchers; they come with the idea that this will be their home.

My Aunt was brain damaged as a toddler when she nearly drowned. She came to Rainbow Acres as an older adult and absolutel loved being there. She participated in many activities and was alway so proud of what she accomplished. The staff takes a personal interest in each camper and encourages them to be all they can be and do. She was so happy there and remained until her health required constant care. It meant a great deal to our family to know the quality of life she was able to have at Rainbow Acres!

Tremendous care given my Aunt when she spent many years as a rancher. There programs and staff are outstanding and they take a personal interest in each rancher and encourage them to excel in the talents they posses such as singing, art, crafts, etc. She loved being a rancher!

Almost ten years ago, when I first saw Rainbow Acres’ rural campus (the Ranch) where adults with developmental disabilities live, work, and socialize, I was struck by two things: the beauty of the rural setting, and the way the staff, residents, and volunteers there interact as equal members of a community. I soon learned that the residents are known as “the Ranchers”, to show that they are contributing members of their rural community and NOT clients in some impersonal institution. I was impressed that the Ranchers were all so engaged, confident…and busy! But, they’re never too busy for a greeting, a chat, a high-five, or maybe a hug. The Ranch has changed hugely since my first visit, sometimes it seems almost miraculously. The transformation of the Ranch has really been due to the hard work and planning of staff, and many generous donations of Rainbow’s supporters over the past decade. Thanks to a long-term building campaign, the Ranchers now live in gorgeous group houses with lofty common living areas and private bedrooms. They no longer have lunch in the small and very utilitarian cafeteria where I first ate with them, now they have a beautiful new Community Center with a central kitchen and room for activities, performances, and programs. The buildings are not the only changes over the past several years. They’ve added a computerized medical management system that helps staff keep all the Ranches safe and healthy; they have several horses that the Ranchers take care of; and they’ve added new music therapy and developmental therapy programs. Whenever I visit the Ranch there’s always so much going on, like people working in the gardens and craft shops, choir practice, or just playing a pick-up game of b-ball!

The Ranchers bring the results of this organization out into the community in all they do and their attitudes. Whether travelling to participate in Special Olympics or to perform beautiful music with the Choir, the members of this community make an impression wherever they go. They’re known for their sportsmanship, accomplishments, and open, friendly manners. All of us in the local community, and all the friends of Rainbow, are inspired by the way this organization helps people overcome their challenges.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

The only thing I would change about Rainbow is to expand it! There are so many people out there with special needs who could be living a more fulfilled life. I understand that Rainbow is working on expanding to accommodate more Ranchers in the near future. I’d like to see this organization’s model of service become an example that is followed by more and more communities of this type all over the nation.
