PRO-PAPA Missions America, Inc. a non profit foundation was founded in May 1996 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania by Sister Laurinda Mayer and Bill Casey, CEO of Conemaugh Health Systems, where our office is located. Sister Laurinda, had spent a dozen years in Honduras and had returned to Johnstown to raise funds for a private clinic, Clinic Suyapa, to help ease the suffering of those in her community, Pueblo Urraco, Honduras. The town of 5,000 had been badly flooded several times in the past decade. Sister Laurinda has since returned to Honduras.
Programs: PRO-PAPA Missions America, Inc. provides a variety of service programs in Honduras. We coordinate efforts with our sister organization -- Pro PAPA Honduras, so that our communication is clear and that our projects, services and humanitarian aid gets to the people who need it most... In the past three years we have sent over 100 TONS of humanitarian aid. * La Clinica Suyapa, the private clinic in Urraco, where we susidize the program with payments of $700 per month and we sent medical supplies and equipment to get the clinic operational.* Caring Center: we built an addition to the Clinic to provide space for training for nurses and midwives, and for food storage/distribution.* Mission Brigades: Every year since 1996 we have sent a volunteer brigade of doctors, dentists to provide primary health care. * Construction Teams: Every year since 1996 we have sent construction teams to rural areas to build houses for those in need.* "Work for Food" Program: After Hurricane Mitch much farmland was flooded and no food could be grown. We gave families food in exchange for their work, to rebuild their lives.* Well and Water Tower Project: We dug a deep well and built a storage tower to provide clean water for three villages near Vera Cruz.
