Opportunity village was founded in 1954 by seven dedicated, committed and loving families who were determined to give their children with disabilities the best lives possible. And now, almost 60 years later, opportunity village is one of the most recognized and respected community rehabilitation programs in the united states. Since these humble origins, opportunity village has grown to become nevada's favorite - the largest private, not-for-profit community habilitation program, nearly 3,000 people annually through vocational training, community employment, day services, advocacy and arts and social recreation. Here, people with disabilities are able to find new friends, realize future career paths, seek independence and community integration and unleash creative passions - all they want is a chance at a life we all take for granted. Opportunity village is nevada's largest employer of people with disabilities - people who were previously considered unemployable. We call them ovips - op
The employment resource centers give people with the most severe disabilities the chance to have the same sense of pride and purpose that come from earning a paycheck that the rest of us take for granted. The participants in the program learn the work related attitudes and behaviors that are needed to be successful in any job by working on various packaging and assembly tasks, making promotional buttons, assembling direct mail pieces, cooking thousands of cookies every week as well as providing document imaging and document destruction services. Most of the individuals served by this program receive a special minimum wage based on their productivity.
the service contracts provide community-based employment and training opportunities for individuals with intellectual and other disabilities. Opportunity village operates a number of "small businesses" where over 70% of the workers are people with severe disabilities. They clean over 4. 5 million square feet of government and commercial office space. They serve over 350,000 meals every year to the airmen at nellis afb. They operate the postal service center for nellis afb and handle all secure and non-secure mail. They provide restroom attendant services for mccarran international airport (the gateway to las vegas). Most of the individuals served by this program make wages at or above the federal minimum wage and are eligible for health insurance and other benefits.
the thrift store provides training and employment opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities in retail operations and retail processing. The participants in the program are responsible for sorting, stocking, customer service and cashiering duties within the retail operation. The thrift store location brings many improvements but it also features everything customers have come to love at the previous store locations. It features a section called the "treasure trove", showcasing the very best merchandise from partners such as world market center and the national hardware show.
