Programs: DoorWay is an intensive, 9-month, faith-based rehabilitation and recovery program designed to help residents overcome drug/alcohol addictions. Residents spend 20 hrs/wk in a comprehensive curriculum of self-discovery, life-skills, spiritual renewal, mentoring and family reunification.Since 1999, EEG-OC Biofeedback, a collaborations with SW Health Technology Foundation, has been an integral part of DoorWay. In The Journal of Neurotherapy, researchers who had specifically monitored the Mission's Biofeedback program, concluded that, "...the combination of electroencephalographic operating conditioning (EEG-OC) and faith-based programs is effective in the treatment of crack-cocaine addiction." DoorWay is the only program in Texas to offer this multilevel approach to drug/alcohol recovery. Doorway's treatment and recovery services are exclusively religious in nature and are not subjected to licensure or regulation by TCADA.Education & Work Study - If men are going to have a chance to become contributing members of society, they will need a fulfilling job with a living wage. Many need a GED before going on to further education and/or vocational training. For some, their time on the streets has left them physically incapable of securing and maintaining a job requiring physical labor. The Mission assists our residents in many ways. We offer a comprehensive GED program - recently opened free to people from the surrounding East End neighborhoods in English and Spanish - a job readiness program offering resume and interview skills, job search assistance and referrals, occupational aptitude testing and more. It is often the stepping-stone for those interested in pursuing a post-secondary education. The Mission established the Convalescent Care Center in 1991, with renovations in 2002 and 2004, to meet a growing need among indigent hospital patients who found themselves with no place to recuperate after a hospital discharge. The Center provides a safe short-term environment to continue their convalescence from surgery, illness or injury while facilitating the care prescribed by the hospital or other referring entities through intensive case management services including need assessments, treatment planning, referral coordination and advocacy. Residents are also provided, at no cost, the essential services of nutritious meals, clothing and shelter in a clean, supportive and nurturing environment. Our Convalescent Care Center, the largest in Texas and the third largest in the nation, receives calls daily from various hospitals across South Texas, other emergency shelters and the VA inquiring about the availability of convalescent beds.Basic Services - The Open Door Mission constantly evaluates its programs and services to ensure we are making the most effective and efficient use of the donations entrusted to us. One such evaluation led us to limit admission to men who were willing to invest the time and hard work necessary to successfully transform broken lives. As a small, independent organization, we realized we could better serve the community with this more concentrated focus than to just offer a hot meal and a bed to those with no wish to permanently get off the street. The Mission will, however, also open its doors when severe weather or other crises displace large numbers of Houstonians.Disciple Partners is a transitional program that provides individualized services for our residents as they work to become self-sufficient. Overall, it is designed to help men make the shift from the structure and routine of the DoorWay Program to life outside the Mission -- preparing the men for independent living. Disciple Partners helps men find and maintain jobs and develop and maintain a relationship with a church community. Other services include job referrals, vocational training, resume development, interviewing skills training and recovery group participation.
