NYPIRG is the single most important good government group in New York City and New York State. NYPIRG does it all. Not only does NYPIRG deliver a tremendous bang for the donor's buck, it is the rare public interest group with tremendous policy expertise, and an energetic and highly effective team of advocates able to organize the public across New York State and city. NYPIRG is an invaluable institution and should be supported by all public minded New Yorkers.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Public transit in NYC, ethics reform in NYC, clean water and clean air standards I breath and drink.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

NYPIRG needs to upgrade their website and use the full array of social media outreach tools. NYPIRG also needs a funding base commensurate with their advocacy accomplishments.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

NYPIRG's professionalism, competence and record of achievement. They are truly focused on real world results.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Professional, highly competent, knowledgeable and energetic.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Organizationally: Build a sustainable donor base by hiring more experienced FR people and upgrade its website and communications. Programmaticly:Increase it's use of paid media and further strengthen it's already impressive grass roots organizing.

Ways to make it better...

I have no complaints. This stellar group is a pleasure to work with.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Inadequate funding base, and a lack of donor cultivation. NYPIRG is so lean and focused on programmatic results that it has not created events and opportunities for high donors to get to know the group and appreciate its accomplishments.

One thing I'd also say is that...

Great group. In many ways a model for any social change or public interest group.

It is hard to be an organization with two distinct missions. For NYPIRG it is advocacy on behalf of the environment and the people, and also to train new leaders for communities. And NYPIRG does it so beautifully and successfully, and has done it for decades. I worked on a variety of projects along side of them over the years, am a long-time donor, and a colleague to leadership and canvassers, and in each instance, my efforts were multiplied, I learned new strategies and techniques, and was inspired by everyone I touched. The accomplishments of NYPIRG are many, and their legacy is recorded in NY State laws, policies, and regulations, and in the legions of activist citizens and professionals they have trained.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Many critical environmental & consumer laws & regulations passed while empowering citizens and training the next generation of community leadership.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The great mix of the optimism & innovation of student organizers, and the seasoned permanent staff, is a potent mix & makes for a true learning community. They are always moving ahead, but if it takes 10 years (e.g., for the bottle bill), they are there.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Do more of the same... they are near perfect. They could do more work in Albany, expand to more campuses for organizing, give more training to more student organizers.
