New York Blood Center will provide our community with the highest-quality transfusion products and services, as well as leading-edge research, technological and medical care innovation, and education in the field of transfusion medicine.
NYBC operates nearly 40 permanent donation centers and conducts over 30 mobile blood drives per day in five regions (Brooklyn/Staten Island, Hudson Valley, Long Island, New Jersey and New York City) collecting close to 500,000 donations per year to serve the needs of potentially 20 million people in New York and New Jersey.NYBC operates a 24-hour hotline, maintaining an inventory of frozen rare blood for patients around the world with special transfusion needs, and performing specialized clinical patient transfusion services within hospitals and surgical suites. Our Lindsley F. Kimball Research Institute (LFKRI) has pushed the organization to new heights in knowledge about and discoveries related to blood and blood-related diseases. There is promising on-going research, investigation, and information sharing related to blood that spans chemistry, biology, molecular studies, genetics, virology, immunology and epidemiology. The 140 researchers supporting these programs have important and fascinating stories to share. Our partnership with the Hemophilia Services Consortium helps deliver needed clotting factors directly to local hemophilia patients each day. We are home to the National Cord Blood Program (NCBP), the world?s first and largest public cord blood bank, which makes available a life-saving alternative for patients who need a bone marrow transplant to survive but cannot find a genetically compatible donor. We serve as the regional arm for the National Marrow Donor Program, which since its inception in 1989 has helped recruit close to 200,000 potential bone marrow donors and facilitated over 600 bone marrow transplants.

While this charity may in fact do wonderful things through its work, it is also capable of great wrong. If you have a choice where to donate blood, please consider the information below.
New York Post, May 28, 2015 (excerpt)
After about 30 years of using a colony of chimpanzees in Liberia for biomedical research, which ended 10 years ago, the New York Blood Center has now withdrawn all funding for them, prompting animal welfare groups to urge the center to reconsider its decision.
For now, the Humane Society of the United States is supporting the chimps, which are owned by the government of Liberia, and is starting a campaign to raise funds for them.
“The New York Blood Center is abandoning 66 chimpanzees and leaving their fate to chance,” said Wayne Pacelle, president of the society. The cost of caring for and feeding the chimps is about $30,000 a month.
Brian Hare, an anthropologist and primatologist at Duke University who is also known for his studies of dog intelligence, started a petition on Change.org to urge people to contact the New York Blood Center.
Mr. Hare said in an email, “I have studied great apes for 20 years in all contexts across the globe — labs, zoos, sanctuaries, the wild” and others. “Never, ever have I seen anything even remotely as disgusting as this.”
