New Community for Children (NCFC) was founded in 1988. New Community for Children empowers children though educational, cultural, and spiritual enrichment. Toward that end, NCFC works with parents, teachers, the community, and other social service organizations in Washington, DC to address the comprehensive educational needs of children. We prepare students for post-secondary education, careers, and/or vocational training to become responsible, productive adults who, in turn, will give their time and talents back to their communities.
NCFC operates three programs: ASAP, LEAP, and our Older Youth Program. Our programs span three sites and serve 225 students daily between the hours of 3:30 to 7:00 p.m. (8 p.m. for Older Youth), Monday through Friday. In the ASAP Program, elementary students are provided with two hours of daily instruction in grade appropriate math and language arts enrichment activities. Additionally, students take part in arts and other enrichment activities designed to stimulate learning and exploration. During the summer the ASAP program operates on a full-day schedule to provide enrichment, academic, arts, and recreational programming. This site serves approximately 40 students. Our LEAP Program, an elementary program funded in large part by a 21st Century Community Learning Center grant through DC OSSE. This program is similar to our ASAP program but operates at Scott Montgomery Elementary School in partnership with KIPP WILL Academy, and Midnight Forum. The program provides arts, reading, math, enrichment, and recreational programming daily to students. This site serves approximately 150 students. Our Older Youth Program activities often incorporate technology; i.e. digital journalism- allowing students to develop writing skills, learn desktop publishing, and write a monthly parent update and quarterly newsletter. High school students also begin the process of exploring post-secondary education, skill development such as music production, computer literacy, and academic enrichment. This site will serve approximately 40 students.
