Issues: Children & Youth, Environment, Sports

Location: 3916 Locust Walk Philadelphia PA 19104 USA

Mission: Neighborhood Bike Works is a nonprofit educational organization in Philadelphia. We seek to increase opportunities for urban youth in underserved neighborhoods by offering educational, recreational, and career-building opportunities through bicycling. We also promote cycling as a healthy, affordable, environment-friendly form of transportation.
Programs: Our primary programs are after school classes for neighborhood youth which teach bike maintenance, repair and safe riding. Kids can earn their own bike (with helmet & lock) by completing our basic course & spending time in the shop fixing up donated bikes. We also regularly take rides around the city.

Neighborhood Bike Works is a nonprofit organization in the city of Philadelphia. They work directly with at-risk urban youth between the ages of 8 and 18, providing education and opportunity through bicycling and related topics. The individuals directly affiliated with this organization are some of the most patient and caring people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. They go out of their way every single day and in all they do to meet and exceed the needs of the youth they help.

neighbor hood bike works is like a home away from home, I am always accepted there and i have made some many new friends since i have been there. I can remember my first day at nbw like it was yesterday, i was greeted with such warm welcomes even though i wasn't a member just yet. Since i have become a member of nbw i have accomplished so much, from becoming a junior cyclist to doing touring rides and racing with " the big guys " ; so to speak. the instructors have taught me so much and even though i had a specific career in mind, this non-profit has given me the alternative of doing what ever i want to do in my life. I believe i have become even stronger than i thought i was and now know that if i start with the end in mind i know i can accomplish anything obstacle thrown at me.

i don't think there would be anything i would change about this organization.

I worked at Bike Works for three years and it was a fantastical experience. I came into Bike Works with a love of recycling and bike repair and left with a mission to empower and educate the youth of Philadelphia through hands on learning. I now work for the Philadelphia School District as a Math Teacher. Bike Works was the springboard to my job with the District! Not a day goes by that I don't thank my lucky starts that I had the blessing to work for NBW and all their glory! Thanks NBW!!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Bike Works has changed the lives of so many youth and adults in Philadelphia. It changed my life by letting me build my first bike in Philadelphia at the Bike Church and gave me my first job in Philly as an Earn a Bike Instructor. I instructed over 200 kids in Philly over a 3 year period all who learned how to fix a flat to fixing their chain on a bike that they got to keep. Bike Works also filled my soul with the desire to instruct students at a higher level as a math teacher for the School District.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Bike Works is hindered by its financial resources. It is one of the few non-profits that has an Executive Director that is barely paid more than an Instructor. NBW makes every penny counts and it uses all of its donations of materials to the best of its abilities, but it is hindered because of financial constraints. If it could have a dedicated paid fundraiser/grant writer than it would take off to expectations that no one has even set.

Neighborhood Bike Works is an almost perfect organization. By combining youth development, after-school education, transportation alternatives, environmentalism, and recycling, NBW works with an near complete circle of resources and needs. NBW deserves as much funding and support as possible.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Seeing graduates of the program enter adulthood well prepared for the challenges that await them. I continue to be impressed by the young people who have gone through the NBW programs.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Hire more qualified staff with more pay and benefits.

I am a guidance counselor in a Phila eLementary school. I have had a bikes week program after school for many years. It is fantastic for the kids .They are learning meaningful , important skills. They are woking with very caring adults in a small group. They see the benefits of working hard week by week to earn a bike. They feel very special being in the group. I have always picked a mix of kids including some who have academic and or behavioral challenges Bike works is a place for them to find success and their peers look at them in a different light. NBW ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I first learned about NBW through my scout troop. We went there to learn about bikes for a badge. Then I did the summer camp and got hooked. Now I am a member of the racing team and mounting biking club. I thoroughly enjoy the program and I believe that every child in the Philadelphia area with an interest in bikes or mechanics should complete a program. It will make them a better person.

Neighborhood bike works (NBW) is AWESOME. they help children understand that they need to work to succeed. they have a build-a-bike program for children to build bicycles for themselves and teach the children how to put the bike pieces together. NBW has other programs such as the racing team and the mountain biking club. I ride with the mountain biking club and we ride to Belmont Plateau in Fairmount Park and ride the philly mountain biking assoc. trails there.

riding with the mountain biking club.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

tell the kids in the build-a-bike program about the mountain biking club and race team before they start building the bike so that they can build a bike that will be suited for them to join one of the groups if they choose.

Neighborhood Bike Works is a wonderful organization that has introduced me to the wonderful world of Cycling, from Road to Mountain, as well as taught me how to do everything from changing a tube, to overhauling a bottom bracket. I've learned how to maintain my bikes, how to interact with adults as well as young children, as well as ride alongside traffic. The Staff and Volunteers at NBW are knowledgeable, and kind people that are passionate about cycling as well as being mentors to the students who continually return and support NBW. I have volunteered and taken Earn-A-Bike Courses, and I am part of the NBW Racing Team, this group spans both Road and Mountain cycling, and is a group of Earn-A-Bike Graduates, ranging from 10 to 18 years of age. We rode alongside staff, board members, volunteers, parents, and enthusiasts to Harrisburg in the Summer of 2010 to meet with representatives to raise money for the program. NBW has helped me lose 40 lbs, 30 in the Summer of 2009, and 10 recently. They have also opened doors for the Racing Team to join Amateur // Semi - Pro Teams such as QCW, and Tri-State-Velo, and has gotten some involved in charity cycling events such as the MS 150 City to Shore. Neighborhood Bike Works has opened doors spanning from racing, to volunteering, and even jobs. It has taught hundreds of children from Philadelphia, and surrounding cities how to ride safely, build, and maintain bicycles.

You can't visit this "bike shop in a basement" and come away without a BIG SMILE!

I brought a small troop of Cub Scouts here to fulfill requirements for the Bicycle pin. NBW tailored their program for us, offered a 2-session class on bike maintenance and repair - it was perfect!

My son had such a good time at those sessions that I enrolled him in the 2 week summer camp. Probably the best value summer camp in the city! No end of fun and the pride of knowing that he built a bike himself... and can now fix my bike too!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

my son's joy at the end of each day of camp. Both my sons know how to fix their bikes, thanks to knowledgeable and patient instructors at NBW.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Focus on development and marketing...
