National Music Theatre Network Inc dba The New York Musical Theatre Festival

Rating: 4.83 stars   6 reviews

Issues: Arts & Culture

Location: 250 W. 49th St. Suite 601 New York NY 10019 USA

Mission: The New York Musical Theatre Festival provides a much-needed service to artists and others in the arts community (like young producers): not only does it provide an opportunity for new work to be compellingly showcased in front of both potential producers and presenters and the general public, but it also provides an affordable framework that allows more artists to see their work in three dimensions ? with production elements and a responsive audience. Such opportunities are crucial for the development of both new musicals and of skilled theater practitioners ? but, given the cost of production, are all too rare outside the festival for unknown artists and unproven titles. Because new artists and experienced theater practitioners (even major award-winners) work alongside each other at the festival, NYMF also provides a unique opportunity for hands-on observation and mentorship.
Programs: The largest annual musical theatre event in America, the New York Musical Theatre Festivalprovides an unrivaled showcase for new musicals.  The festival givesartists the crucial chance to hone their craft and develop projects inthe most effective manner -- by realizing new musicals in threedimensions before a live and responsive audience -- and deliversgreater production value and promotional reach than its participantscould otherwise afford or access.  Since its inception in 2004, the NewYork Musical Theatre Festival has proven a remarkably effectivelaunching pad, with over 40 shows transferring to successfulproductions on Broadway, off-Broadway, regionally, on tour, and aroundthe world.

This organization is so important for getting new works out to audiences. It's wonderful to see fresh, creative ideas and the talent is first rate. Watching the performances in intimate settings is another plus. No other organization is doing this work at such a professional level on such a small budget.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

saw three shows

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

expand the festival

We at Theater League are proud to be among the sponsors of NYMF's annal Festival. There is no better or more open-source an opportunity for new composer, lyricist and book writer teams to get their work in front of supportive yet demanding audiences than NYMF. At the same time, NYMF has created a buzz for new musicals and a celebration of the work that has become a welcome part of the Fall theater season-- and all for less than the operating nut on two weeks of SPIDERMAN!

As a donor, I especially appreciate the bang for the buck we get out of our NYMF contribution. These guys and gals work their asses off putting on all of these shows (and keeping the flame burning the year round). I'm tired of opening up not-for-profit theater programs and reading the lists of third assistant marketing directors-- more admin staff than artists. With NYMF, our funds are going to the creatives and artists-- the way it's supposed to be.

Carry on, NYMFers.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

enjoyed the shows, followed the careers of new musical theater creative teams, kept abreast of breaking trends in the art form

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

give them a Tony

A fantastic non profit. I became involved with NYMF thanks to my best friend. I've enjoyed each and every performance I've attended. NYMF also throws a great festival gala!

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the performances and gala

I discovered the NY Musical Play Festival (NYMF) three years ago. I saw 4 or 5 shows and was surprised at their professionalism and overall quality. Two years ago I looked forward to the festival and purchased a package of tickets and saw 12 shows. The quality again was incredible. The stars that were involved in various productions were previous Tony winners and nominees. I was actually lucky enough to see in the audience one Saturday afternoon, Celeste Holme, the original Ado Annie in Oklahoma, sitting in the front row watching a rather more racey version of that story. One weekend that year I saw one show on Friday night and three on the Saturday and Sunday. Heading to the theater for my seventh show at 8 PM on Sunday, I wondered if a seventh show would be such an overload that I was just wating my time. I enjoyed that late Sunday night show if not more at least as much as the previous six. A true testament to the quality of this festival. Last year I became a Patron which entitled me to 30 tickets. I am happy to say that I was able to see 18 shows and recommended a number of them to my friends who also have become converts. NYMF is an incredible festival, full of talented writers (book, composer, lyricists); scenery in many of the shows is top notch and actors are Tony winning caliber. The running of the festival is professional and considering the magnitude of the undertaking is phenomenal.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the last three years and have seen as many shows as time permitted.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

attempt to find theaters that may be a bit more comfortable and/or larger.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the professionalism of the performances.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

helpful, courteous and knowledgeable

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

produce more shows that would run longer in some theaters that might be a bit more comfortable

Ways to make it better...

I had more time to see more shows. Some theaters are a bit small.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

the costs of presenting such quality and still breaking even

One thing I'd also say is that...

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

About once a year

Fantastic organization. Became involved with the organization at the urging of a friend, and was pleasantly surprised, not only with quality of ther work at the festival, but also the depth of support for the organization in the theater community.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the huge selection of performances offered to the public during the Festival

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

getting involved in theater from the earliest stages of development.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

all very passionate about the cause; many of them live and breathe theater, and are wholly dedicated to its development

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

greatly increase the accessibility of theater to even more new yorkers.
