The purpose of the organization is to use science to help people predict, reduce, and prepare for climate change.
Banking on forests initiative: we work to protect the ecosystem services provided by our nation's oldest forests, including carbon storage, fish and wildlife habitat, and clean water. The temperate rainforests of the pacific northwest and alaska are a particular focus of our work, as they are global champions in taking up and storing carbon in their long-lived trees. We advocate for policy reforms at the regional and national level to direct forest management toward restoration, carbon storage, and protection of biodiversity.
climatewise initiative: we help communities better understand and plan for the impacts of climate change. Our project teams coordinate with renowned scientists to provide stakeholders with local projections of climate change trends. We facilitate community planning and decision-making efforts, working across natural and socioeconomic systems to provide integrated and co-beneficial strategies that increase local resilience.
green solutions initiative: we demonstrate the effectiveness of restoration-based solutions to issues of water supply, water quality, flood protection, sea level rise, wildlife risk, and many other natural resource issues that are being exacerbated by climate change. By encouraging decision makers and land owners to enhance nature's services, rather than installing new structures like dams and sea walls, we strive to increase the resilience of both natural and human communities in the face of climate change.
