Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Arts & Culture, Opera

Mission: The vision of the opera company is to establish a center where children, teens and adults can experience and be part of a classical arts organization dedicated to education and appreciation of the fine art of Opera and classical music. Martinez Opera Contra Costa is dedicated to providing the community with numerous programs that engage all socioeconomic levels , age groups, and ethnticities.  Martinez Opera Contra Costa is committed to the realization of the Contra Costa County Cultural Plan, prepared by the Arts and Culture commission of Contra Costa County, which emphisies the importance of arts education, outreach , advocacy and communication. Martinez Opera Contra Costa also recognizes the arts as an emerging potent force in the ecomomic life of cities and rural areas and embracess the restoration and revitalization of communities through the arts, by bringing about a cultural renaissance in the County which will unite communities and create economic opportunity. It is important for non-profit arts organizations to take a role in the lives of youth. The concept of getting ?children off the streets? is a reality and shared by law enforcement officials, California Lawyers for the Arts, Arts and Culture Commission of Contra Costa County and Martinez Opera Contra Costa. Preventing delinquency is a real problem when youth have no outlets. This problem can be addressed with in a positive, progressive and enriching environment. Martinez Opera Contra Costa believes that our program Pro-Production can impact students by exposing them to a theatrical experience from the ground up thus acting as a mentor and cultivator of positive interaction rather than the latter, negative behavior. Teach a child to paint or write poetry and it could help cut down on childhood delinquency and catch ?at risk? youth before their behavior turns into a public problem.  ?California Arts and Healthy Communities? a symposium of art advocates. Lawyers and law enforcement officials concluded that organizations with the capacity to help ?at risk youth? should increase their programs. Martinez Opera Contra Costa aims to build with this alliance already in motion for involving youth in arts. ?It has been shown that the arts reduce crimes and recidivism, if you can get involved in those activities, any kid, no matter what socioeconomic strata, will benefit. The more positives you can put in front of them, the more they will not be involved in anti-social behavior.? Alma Robinson California Lawyers for the Arts.

My entire family...especially my chirdren have benefited greatly from the creative performances we have had the pleasure to experience due to MTZO. MTZO has given us the opportunity to grow in the world of arts. My children now know what an opera is and what beauty a soprano and tenor bring to the world. I hope that MTZO will continue to dazzle. We look forward to so much more. Thank you MTZO.

I have attended both productions put on by Martinez Opera. The high quality of artists and musicians make it a true opera experience. To have this quality of performing in downtown Martinez, is something that I never expected and I am so pleased that it is happening. Being a professional opera singer, I am thrilled to see that the Martinez community can have this art form brought right to their doorstep. I only hope that more people will support the company and keep it going.

The Martinez Opera provides high quality opera performances at an affordable cost. I have volunteered for the opera and am always impressed by the commitment of the Executive Director Maria Billingsley. She is the lifeblood of the opera. It is amazing to me that our small town can produce the caliber of performance that we do. We have gotten rave reviews from the San Francisco Chronicle and people come from all over the Bay Area to attend our opera. It is something we're very proud of here in Martinez. We do, however, always need support and funding from the community. Maria stages bi-monthly Dine with a Diva dinner events which draw about 80 people from our community and is a highly successful fundraiser. As a volunteer, I have paritipcated in many events and find each event highly rewarding. It feels wonderful to be in the thick of things and know that I am supporting a community treasure. Fellow volunteers are highly committed as well.

Great shows. It's amazing that a little town like Martinez -- population about 35000 -- has an opera. A first-rate one too.

Hubby and I went to a fund raiser for the MTZO recently for its "Dine with a Diva" dinner. What a fabulous time we had. The diva of the day was a young beautiful woman who had the voice of an angel. We need to keep the MTZO in Martinez because it is a jewel. The folks behind the MTZO (Maria Billingsly and friends) work very hard to raise funds for the opera to have a permanent home. We are so lucky to have them. Go MTZO!

It is such a delight to have a local opera company, especially when the performances are so exceptional. This is from people who have seen opera in Paris, Santa Fe, Walnut Creek and San Francisco. Keep up the good work

The Martinez Opera Company is wonderful. I have gone to several of their productions both small and large scale and have been delighfully entertained. The quality of talent is superb. Costume and set designs have been spectacular given their small budget. I would reccommned anyone to see one of their productions. Your money is well invested on a ticket!

As volunteer I was treated with dignity and respect. The staff is of the highest caliber. More so the performance I was able to enjoy was far beyond my expectations and was a first class opera performance.

I attended the 2008 perfromance of M. Butterfly on a lark - I had a friend who got me in as a ticketer. I am originally from New York and have attended numerous live performances at the Metropolitan Opera House there. So when I saw M. Butterfly in Martinez I wasn't sure what to expect. Since I didn't pay for it, whatever it was would have been OK. Instead what I saw and heard made me feel like I was again at a professional opera house. While it is a small company relying on many volunteers and local supporters, the producers really know talent and so there were some of the finest young voices in opera right here in Martinez. Also the small but professional orchestral group was as good as the singers. Actually I was amazed. From my standpoint there is nothing to be critical about in any negative sense. I thought the performance was easily worth spending $50 for. (Note - the last time I went to the Met I spent $110 for an orchestra seat - and that was 20 or 30 years ago. Of course in the wonderful MTZ H.S. performance center every seat is an orchestra seat! Mr. Leslie SPaiser

I have been enjoyed Opera for many years. I have not missed any of the Martinez Opera performances and I am really impressed for the quality of them, Martinez Opera is always very careful in bringing the best to the public, not only in regards to the singers which is the most important thing but also in the way everything is set up on the stage. I am aware of the extra activities that Martinez Opera does with children which help to educate them about what good music means. I want to point that I have seen Madame Butterfly in several occasions including one performance done at the New York Metropolitan House which was run by PBS, but in my opinion the one done by Martinez Opera has been the best. Good way to go MTZO! I hope we can enjoy another good performace pretty soon. Elizabeth Hernandez Concord, CA.
