MRDF was established in 1970 to develop a better understanding of the earth's marine resources and improve the quality of life through education and the responsible use of marine resources for food, fresh water, energy, minerals, and medicine. In its early years, MRDF was primarily involved in the development of technology and techniques to live and work in the sea, including the PRINUL project of 1972-1976. In 1984, MRDF launched the world's first underwater habitat open to recreational divers and students - the MarineLab Undersea Laboratory. In 1985, a marine science education program, named MarineLab after the Undersea Laboratory, was created. MarineLab has grown from serving under 500 students its first year to 6,000 students and teachers in 2001.
