This is such a wonderful program for kids in foster care! lots of these kids do not feel they are in control of anything in their lives as well as think they have very little or no value in life. This program gives them the power to do something and do it well. Music is such a therapeutic way of getting through what these kids have gone through. I personally watched a troubled, angry teen become a confident, young woman largely because of this program. She was able to "find her voice" through KING.
The kids in care who I have placed in this program have thrived. Not only do they get a music teacher with this program, they get a friend and mentor that can spur a lifetime of growth and opportunity. If only there were more programs like this to go around, maybe the prospects for youth in foster care would not be so bleak. This program is truly life changing for the kids who get a chance to experience it.
I am Administrative Assistant to the Blanco County Attorney who is the prosecutor for our CPS cases; I also serve on our Blanco County Child Protection and Family Advocacy Board - one of our kids was placed in foster care in Travis County - I heard about your organization from one of your board members and told his CASA worker this would be something that might be beneficial to him - Well, he is in the music mentorship program and is working toward a music scholarship at ACC - he has performed at a CASA annual fund raiser and was a huge success - your program has helped this young man to gain confidence in himself and has shown a sense of humor that we had not seen before - in closing, a big thank you to your organization - music for some kids really does make a difference!
This program provides more than free music lessons and instruments to children in foster care in Texas. Children are given the opportunity to not only learn an art, but confidence and self esteem. These kids begin to smile and feel good about themselves when they learn they can accomplish anything they set their mind to. The private lesson is a form of therapy for some of these children, and an opportunity to learn how to express themselves through music when words may be too difficult to find. I highly recommend this opportunity to be given to as many children as possible, but this can only occur through continued support in the community. Thank you to everyone involved to this program and the children of Texas!!
I am a music teacher for Kids in a New Groove, and it is one of the most unique and exceptional programs with which I have ever been involved. I see first hand the impact that music lessons can have on children in foster care or shelters, and I am constantly re-convinced of the life-changing power of music. These students work harder than most any I have had in my 10 year career of teaching music, and they are truly grateful for the time we spend with them. Not only the students themselves but the guardians of these children always have fantastic things to say about the students' progress, dedication, and hard work.
Kids in a New Groove is a great organization that was founded by great people!
In the past, youth in the Texas Foster Care System have lacked these types of service, but now Kids in a New Groove is making it possible! I do not know of other organizations that offer free music lessons to foster care youth, so when I heard about Kids in a New Groove I could not wait to be apart of such an inspiring organization.
Most children in foster care would never be able to experience these opportunities. Youth growing up in the foster care system might not ever have the opportunity to engage in music lessons with a qualified music teacher, but now that is an option made possible through Kids in a New Groove. This is a great program that can not only help boost their self-esteem, but introduce them to music. This program offers so much more than words can describe. I think this program can be therapeutic and can make a HUG difference in the lives of our foster youth. Everyone that I have spoken to loves the program and has nothing but positive things to say. Caseworkers have reported that youth that participate in this program often improve their behaviors and grades in school. This program reinforces positive behavior and I think can have great outcomes for the youth.
Let's continue to support this organization and help them grow so they can serve more youth in the foster care system!
I have donated to Kids in a New Groove and feel that it is one of the best nonprofits I have ever come across. This organization is reaching kids that are otherwise excluded from the arts. I only wish that every kid who has to go through the painful journey of foster care could experience something like Kids in a New Groove. At their fundraiser, one of the boys performed and it was magical - for him and for us! Please spread the word about Kids in a New Groove - they need to grow this program!!!
I am the volunteer coordinator at Helping Hand Home for Children... so though I am not technically a "client served," I do represent the clients served by Kids in a New Groove-- kids in the foster care system who are currently living at HHH, which is a residential treatment center for children who have been abused and neglected.
I was ecstatic to hear about KING-- it almost sounded too good to be true! It was incredibly easy to sign our kids up and get them started with music lessons right away. Missy, the certified band teacher who comes to give our kids lessons each Saturday, is extremely professional and whole-heartedly committed to our kids.... so committed that she switched to Saturday morning lessons so she could continue to teach them even after getting a job within the school district!
We currently have kids taking piano, guitar, and percussion classes, and one will begin violin lessons soon! These weekly lessons have given our kids a chance to see the pay-off of perservance, patience, and hard work. They are being given skills they can take with them long after they leave our doors and move on to families. And most importantly, they are gaining confidence in their newfound talents and honing a skill they can focus on when they are feeling at their lowest. I think this is a tremendous means for self-expression for our kids, who all have unspeakably traumatic pasts.
This past spring, Kids in a New Groove purchased a guitar for one of the most committed students. He is extremely proud of this and it has raised his self esteem tremendously! They hosted a luncheon for the kids this past Christmas, where they got to meet and interact with other KING students. All our kids returned from the luncheon beaming with happiness. One of our students got a chance to perform with professional musicians at a recent KING fundraiser. He left with stars in his eyes and I know he is forever changed by that experience.
This is a truly amazing organization and I hope they can continue to grow and reach out to more and more foster families and agencies in order to spread the healing power of music.
