I first became involved with Heartwood in 1999 and from the first minute I felt welcome and informed and empowered.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the food, the fun, and the information.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

empower all those folks who live and love the place where they live, but don't think they can do anything about the threats facing the community.

I have been involved with Heartwood since 1994 and from the moment I arrived at my first Forest Council, Heartwood became my family and

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Stopping logging on public lands. Creating a moratorium on chip mills being built in the state of Missouri.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The people, the music, the dedication.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

The best people I've ever met.

National Forest Protection. State Forest Monitoring. Sustainable Communities promotion. Network support for upstart grassroots groups with lots of heart and little budget. A finger in virtually every import environmental fight from Missouri to Virginia, from Mississippi to the Great Lakes. No other organization does what Heartwood does. As a network of activists and grassroots organizations, Heartwood brings folks together twice yearly in some of the most beautiful areas in the entire central hardwoods and eastern regions to organize, stratigize, inform and enjoy. An amazing group of passionate, treehuggin',

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

my day-to-day connections with activists in other geographical areas and bioregions.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the inspiration it brings to my life.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

passionate, empathetic, active and effective.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

significantly benefit the national forest closest to you.

Heartwood is a link between small groups of people or individuals who would otherwise feel isolated in their work to protect the forests in their community. Heartwood helps these individuals/groups get the tool and information that they need to pursue their specific goals. They use the resources they have very efficiently.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

learning how to do forest protection work.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

have them be a little better at getting donations from their own members (if only their members had more money that they could give.)

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the people who we get to meet and work with on our common and individual goals.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

very dedicated. Most were not paid, and the ones who were paid, we not doing this work just to get a pay check.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

it could help a whole lot more people and groups and spend all of its time doing the work and none of its time fund raising to do the work.

Ways to make it better...

the group had more money to help pay the expenses of the volunteers so we didn't have to work extra at our "day jobs" to be able to be volunteers.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

how many areas are under threat and in need of our help.

One thing I'd also say is that...

it has been amazing how Heartwood has been able to find such a diverse experience and expertise pool over the past 20 years.

Dedicated, persistent, and resourceful. People helping people protect the places they love. Heartwood is a model for groups in other parts of the country because of the way the groups and individuals help each other, rather than competing

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the great way groups and individuals cooperate, share information, come to each other's assistance, and coordinate efforts

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The events are always held in a beautiful forest setting, with great healthy food, lively music and a inspiring and informative program -- family friendly too!

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

very friendly, very helpful -- dedicated, passionate, knowledgeable, and industrious

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

transform the communities of the hardwood forest region
