A non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, healthmpowers was founded in 1999 to address growing concern over the health of our youth. With a mission to "promote healthy behaviors and environments by empowering students, school staff and families to improve health and academic achievement," the organization has established a 13-year track record of improving student health knowledge, behavior, physical activity, bmi and school policies--all without taking away valuable class time. Healthmpowers is nationally recognized as an evidence-based program by usda's snap-ed, using the guidelines established by the center for disease control and prevention (cdc) as the foundation of our multi-year program. In addition to the multi-year program, healthmpowers launched a childcare program in 2014, and is the training partner for the georgia department of education, georgia department of public health, and georgia shape. The organization continues to work collaboratively with other national and state organizations including centers for disease control and prevention, shape america, alliance for a healthier generation, presidential youth fitness program, action for healthy kids, georgia shape, and children's healthcare of atlanta. During the 2014-15 fiscal year, healthmpowers served a total of 442 schools, 3,099 teachers, and 265,806 students through the multi-year elementary school program, the child care pilot program, "power up for 30" trainings in partnership with the georgia departments of education and public health, and georgia shape grantee trainings. Independently audited financial information from the fiscal year showed that 93% of expenses were directly related to program services. The multi-year healthmpowers program is a school-wide intervention that includes trainings, direct services and resource materials to empower schools with the tools they need to sustain positive health and environmental outcomes on their own upon completion of the program. The program is structured to provide maximum resources and benefits to underserved populations. In the 2014-15 school year, the multi-year program served 45,161 students and 2,196 staff in 80 snap-ed sponsored schools. The average free and reduced lunch rate was 84%, indicating that a large portion of the population is underserved. The value and impact of this work extends beyond the services healthmpowers provides. During 2015-15, healthmpowers' team members provided approximately 2,762 hours of direct nutrition and physical activity, while approximately 45,753 additional hours of nutrition and physical activity instruction were provided by respective participating school staff using the resources, lessons and training provided by healthmpowers. Results from both the additional instruction and increased physical activity include an 87% improvement in student nutrition and physical activity behaviors; a 69% improvement in student's pacer fitness test which measures aerobic fitness; and a 78% of students maintaining or improving bmi percentiles. The childcare pilot served 6 centers, 48 teachers, 441 students, and 55 family members. Each pilot center completed the growing fit: nutrition and physical activity assessment at the start of the year and at the end of the year to examine center policies and practices. By the end of the first year, all childcare centers improved, on average, eight different polices or practices. In less than one year, most centers were able to improve their programs in nutrition education, caregiver and family nutrition training, and the eating environment. Due to these positive results, the program will continue and expand in 2015-16 school year. Since 2013, healthmpowers has served as the training partner for power up for 30, reaching over 500 schools. Power up for 30 is a statewide initiative supported by the georgia departments of public health and education to increase physical activity during the school day in georgia. Elementary schools are provided a one-day, eight-hour professional development workshop, technical support, physical activity resources and recognition opportunities. Outcomes demonstrated that schools participating in the power up for 30 initiative made statistically significant improvements in providing students with more pa time, resulting in improved cardiovascular health outcomes. Compared with schools that did not participate in the initiative, power up for 30 schools saw increases in before and after-school student physical activity programs, days of recess, classroom physical activity time, and more students achieving the "healthy fitness zone" for aerobic capacity.

So often schools are focused on test scores and making AYP, but the students at our school are concerned about decisions that will affect them the rest of their lives. Our students are led by a group of health-conscious leaders who promote healthy behaviors on a daily basis. Our students are quick to point out unhealthy habits and look for ways to incorporate moving into our daily lives. Students encourage one another and adults to take the longer route when walking, wash hands often, drink lots of water, and eat fruits and vegetables. The students at UPE are excited about making healthy choices that will benefit them from now on!!!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

As an adult, my students have encourage me to walk at recess instead of sitting on the bench. The have influenced me to choose water over soda. I want to be a healthy role model for them!

I have been involved with HMP for the ten years of existence. I am very proud that there is a program in Georgia that is attacking these health issues. The environment a child is living plays such a big part of how changes can be made. HMP addresses these influences and engages parents, school staff and children together. Being a “Baby Boomer” we were encouraged to play outside and spent very little “sofa time”. HMP is making great strides is getting today’s children of Georgia to return to healthier eating and exercise routine as a normal day to day existence. Childhood obesity has become a very serious medical problem nationwide that can lead to diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. These were once issues that only affected adults yet now we have to deal with them on a child’s level . We are a fatter society than ever existed. We do have a health crisis on our hands and HMP is addressing the affect today’s environment is having on our youth. There is no other program like it in Georgia. It is unmatched and needs to be spread nationwide.

HealthMPowers is a wonderful organization that has survived and flourished despite a continual need for funds to support their mission of helping establishing healthy eating habits and exercise programs for children in the middle and elementary school environment. It has taken real dedication from the staff to make this happen and they continually upgrade their programs to achieve more positive results. It's hard to believe how far this organization has progressed in the past few years.

Currently serve as a member of their Board and try to participate where my areas of expertise can be helpful, but admit that I don't have enough time to totally dedicate my efforts.

HealthMPowers’ mission is to promote healthy behaviors and environments by empowering students, school staff, and families to improve health and academic achievement. We saw this in action as the HealthMPowers team brought the 'Body Walk' to Montgomery Elementary School. There was so much excitement surrounding this exhibit, that included stations about different parts of the human body (brain, mouth, heart, etc.), that we were able to recruit over 50 parent volunteers to help set it up, take it down, and teach our children about their bodies and healthy behaviors. It was a wonderful way to incorporate parents into their children's school learning environment, and to also educate and empower them as well. All of the parents loved being involved, and we received an overwhelming amount of positive feedback from them, and also from the students and teachers and staff. Our children were able to learn about the power of choice and in a fun way. In addition to the exhibit, we were also provided with materials that we could use in the classroom and at home to review and continue teaching our children about healthy eating, physical activity, and healthy living. We really enjoyed and appreciated the whole Body Walk experience and know that our entire school community benefitted from it. We also look forward to the monthly HealthMPowers’ newsletters, which we send home to families each month. The Kid2Kid Newsletter is a health newsletter written by kids for kids, filled with fun articles about eating healthy, exercising, and being a good role model. We encourage our children to submit material to HealthMPowers for the newsletter and hope to see one of our students in there someday! Thanks so much HealthMPowers! Keep doing what you are doing to help improve the health of our children and families in Georgia!

The Body Walk exhibit was a wonderful way to teach our children about healthy eating, physical activity, healthy living, and the power of choice. It was also a great way to involve parents and teachers, educating and empowering them as well.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

There is nothing that I can think of that I would change about this organization. We have enjoyed our experiences so far, and the staff have been great. We have had a particularly great relationship with Sandy Norris.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

I really loved the Body Walk exhibit and what our children loved from it.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

The staff were absolutely wonderful. We love Sandy Norris! And we were able to recruit many wonderful parent volunteers.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

If they had the money, they could reach out to every school in GA and help to promote healthy choices and healthy living for a healthier GA.

Ways to make it better...

Not possible. Our experience was great!

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Like any organization, they could probably do more and reach out to more schools with more resources.

One thing I'd also say is that...

Thank you!

I was introduced to HealthMPowers through my principal. I was excited to hear there was an organization out there willing to help me in my teaching field in helping students on not just physical fitness but more importantly on nutrition. I see so MANY over-weight elementary students and it scares me what they will look like in ten years. I truly believe the statement that this will be the first generation that will not out live their parents!! The HMP staff are the most passionate excited group I ever worked with. I get such a rush when we have one of our meetings that I just wnat to go back to my school and save the world, LOL!!!! They really are great in providing all the information that I need to promote this healthy way of living lifestyle. They hold NOTHING back. They definitely deserve National Recognition!!! Thank you for allowing me to speak on behalf of this awesome organization. Coach, Donna Peavy, Pulaski County Elementary School. Hawkinsville, Ga.

HealthMPowers, formerly Kids' Health, came to our elementary school in 2003 and guided us in the development of our School Health Council whose goal was to improve the mind, body and spirit of our students and staff through healthy nutrition and exercise habits. The work of local community members, school staff, PTA representatives, and couty-level leaders assisted us in the improvement of our school lunch program, the implementation of health risk appraisals for staff and students, before and after-school exercise clubs for students as well as th ehiring of a full time health educator. Over the years our involvement with HealthMPowers positively impacted the culture of our school; this fine organization held a summer leadership camp for our students which resulted in student-lead health programs during the school year.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Walking through the cafeteria & observing students & teachers making wise choices, observing the excitement of teachers & students exercising together, & knowing we had the full support of HealthMPowers in every aspect of our educational program was rewar

HealthMPowers is an asset to our students, faculty, and parents. The program is designed to teach nutritional and fitness values to all of the individuals in our students lives. The staff at HealthMPowers is exceptional. They go out of their way to develop resources that are performance standard based for our classroom teachers to use and implement with our students. They have also assisted our school this year with implementing fitness testing with our 5th grade students and tracking their progress. The students love the Organ Wise Guys who are cartoon characters that help teach our students about the organs of the body, their function, and what we should do to help them work effectively. Our students, staff, and parents love the information and how helpful it is for us all to increase our physical well being.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Working with our students and seeing their choices in the cafeteria and trying to fit more time to exercise into their daily schedules. The homework sheets that go home every month were helpful in getting our parents active and planning balanced meals.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I hope they could receive more funding for the outstanding work they are doing.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Their focus on wellness and doing what's best for the students of Georgia.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Exceptional at their jobs and making the resources and workshops engaging.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Reach more students in the state of GA.

Ways to make it better...

Not possible.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Their efforts for always looking for more funding for the resources that they offer the students in GA.

One thing I'd also say is that...

Walter F. White Elementary School's students and teachers love HealthMPowers and we're looking forward to another successful year with them!

The committment and success of HealthMPowers associates should be recognized. They have completed 10 years with great success with their programming in schools throughout Georgia. Their associates and board members remain committed and actions clearly demonstrate their mission: "HealthMPowers promotes healthy behaviors and environments by empowering students, school staff and families to improve health and academic achievement"

I am the nutrition educator for my school system -Dalton Public Schools. We have completed the first of three years with HealthMPowers. The staff support that HealthMPowers offers to the classroom and other teachers is awesome. The assemblies that are performed at each school are full of great information for the children. The assemblies are high energy and motivational for the students. HealthMPowers is committed to their mission of educating young people regarding their health. I applaude their efforts and look forward to two more years with them as we move forward to year two.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Witnessing the excitement of the students as the HealthMPowers staff visits each school. This organization is very dedicated to their cause.
