Target demographics: women

Geographic areas served: Asia, Americas, and Africa

Programs: a training-to-employment program. Reporters are trained in traditional reporting, and increasingly, in photojournalism and videojournalism. After they complete the training, they receive a long-term employment offer at living wages.

Global Press Institute is an award-winning, high-impact social venture that uses journalism as a development tool to educate, employ, and empower women in the developing world to produce professional local news coverage that elevates global awareness and catalyzes social change.
Since our founding in 2006, GPI has trained and employed 135 women across 26 countries. Our reporters often come from underprivileged, underrepresented communities and include members of the Dalit (“untouchable”) caste in Nepal and India, former sex workers in Africa, and indigenous women in Latin America.

GPI’s reporters generate high-quality news content that is published on our online news site and marketed to dozens of news agencies around the globe. More than 25% of GPI stories in the last two years have catalyzed direct action, sparking social protest and provoking international attention to issues first covered by GPI. GPI stories have even resulted in law changes in two countries.
