Nonprofit Issues:

Animals

Address:

PO Box 1777 Marco Island FL 34146 USA

Mission:

Our mission is to end the cruelty of pet overpopulation by rescuing abandoned cats and kittens and sterilizing the feral and stray cat population in the community.

Results:

TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return) for Community (Feral) Cats TNR is one of For the Love of Cat’s key directives. The community issues of cat overpopulation cannot be achieved through the adoption process. It must be accomplished through sterilization of the existing community cat population. In addition to sterilizing, the cats are vaccinated and under the daily feeding and care of volunteer caregivers. For the Love of Cats works with Domestic Animal Services in Collier County to adhere to the TNR ordinance currently in place. To date, For the Love of Cats has TNR’d over 5000 cats. Caregivers feed over 300 cats on Marco Island every day. Rescue of Abandoned House Cats and Kittens Abandoned pets are a major contributing factor to the increase in community cats throughout Collier County. For the Love of Cats has rescued almost 300 abandoned house cats in the immediate area over the last 4 years. Kittens are a by-product of the community cat colonies. Rescued early, they can be domesticated and adopted into loving homes. We have rescued and adopted over 3000 kittens since 2002 and continue to rescue kittens that are the offspring of abandoned house cats in our community (we rescue the mom cat as well). We no longer have kittens from the community cat colonies because we have fixed and vaccinated all of the free roaming unadoptable cats in the community to our knowledge. Spay/Neuter for Cats of Low Income Families Our Low Income Spay/Neuter program pays for sterilization surgery for cats and kittens owned by families that would otherwise abandon them without this service. Our program is designed to help families keep their pets with the benefit of reducing abandonment and thereby also reducing the number of cats and kittens that add to the existing community cat population. Every year, we help over 75 cats and kittens to keep their home. Emergency Veterinary Services for Low Income Families Many low income families have pets that need urgent veterinary attention and would be forced to allow their pet to suffer or be euthanized without this program. Last year alone, we paid for 3 dental extractions, 3 knee surgeries, 2 cats with severe whole body infections, 1 cancerous eye removal, 1 crushed tail surgery and 2 broken leg surgeries. Each of these emergencies was over $1000 each. Seniors for Seniors Adoption Program Older cats languish in shelters for years and most do not get adopted or worse, they are euthanized to make room for younger animals. Senior citizens are often living alone and depression is a major concern. This program includes cats from Domestic Animals Services and the Humane Society of Naples as well as cats from For the Love of Cats. Cats over 5 years old may be adopted by a senior citizen over the age of 55 at no cost to the adopter. The adoption fee along with a complete care kit for the cat is provided by For the Love of Cats. This program has been a very successful one with over 100 senior cats adopted since 2010.

Target demographics:

rescue abandoned cats and kittens and low income families to keep their pets.

Direct beneficiaries per year:

save the lives of over 350 cats and kittens and helped over 100 families to keep their pets.

Geographic areas served:

Marco Island, Isles of Capri, Goodland and the surrounding rural areas

Programs:

TNR (trap, neuter, return) for feral cats Rescue and adoption of abandoned cats and kittens Spay/neuter of cats owned by families in need

Hi, my name is Murkita, I am a 7 year old cat who was abandoned and recently found a home and a loving family. Thanks to the generosity of For the love of cats Inc; in the name of Jim Rich who offered me medical assistance, today I started a new and healthy life. Thank you very much!

I have been a volunteer for several years now and FTLC continues to be the excellent organization that it has always been and a definite asset to the community where they are located.

The cats always come first at the shelter which is one of the main reasons it is such a pleasure to volunteer at FOR THE LOVE OF CATS. The shelter is run in a professional manner. The shelter has done wonders for the cats on Marco Island and outlying areas.

Professionally run shelter with outstanding owners. They go way beyond what you would expect from owners that care for cats and have knowledgeable volunteers and make sure that volunteers understand the standards expected of them. They communicate with volunteers and cat owners to ensure that their concerns and needs are being addressed.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Cats are not eliminated here.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

None.

Once upon a time, in a land not so far away, lived this remarkable couple named Jan and Jim Rich. Together they transformed a portion of the beautiful home into a magical place where abandoned, sick and forgotten cats and kittens were rescued and loved. There was a vetenerian wizard named Doctor Latayah who made the sick and hurting ones well. There were volunteers who spent countless hours nurturing and socializing the cats and kittens so they would be eligible for adoption into forever homes. Every life was sacred and no cat or kitten in the community was left behind. This story has a happy ending because this fairy tale place actually exists and is called "For the Love of Cats" located in Marco Island, Florida.
I am proud and very blessed to be one of the many volunteers associated with this awe inspiring organization. If there was a ten star rating, I would award it. Since five is the maximum, I reluctantly settle for five.

To All Potential Pet Rescuers looking at this site...There are so many reviews from pet parents...we wanted to give you our prospective as adopted rescued kitties...
Both myself (Zen) and my little sister Panthera were living on the streets...scared, hungry and alone...Although we were saved months apart and not actual siblings we love each other very much ...We both did not know where our next meal was coming from or if we would even survive another day living with the challenges Florida weather presents to pets living alone and uncared for. That’s where Jim and Jan came into the picture. They cared enough to take the time, patience, dedication and resources to capture us...At first we were not happy to be captured but Jim and Jan quickly let us know from day one what it meant to be loved and cared for. Their caring staff provided us with everything we needed...warmth, love , food and a purpose...then just when we thought life was as good as it gets... our furever pet Mom adopted us...providing us with a warm, loving, caring furever home where we have our own room with toys, kitty condos, and plenty of good food. We have screened areas to play in. It is fun to watch the birds and geckos. Life on the inside is Great ! We always hear our Mom say ....it would not have been possible without Jan , Jim and their volunteers going over and above to make sure we were captured and cared for. Ultimately, they found us the Best pet parents a cat could ever want.
A special thank you to the women who hand makes the blankets we were sent home with . We hope she knows what a comfort they were when transitioning to our new home. They still are our security blankets and to this day we still use them.
So if you are looking to adopt a pet.. For The Love Of Cats is the place... Jim , Jan and their volunteers genuinely care about each of us, as well as the homes and people that adopt us. Once you meet Jim and Jan you will see what we are talking about ..They are part of our family now and furever...A big thanks to all of you at For The Love Of Cats ...we would not have the lives we have now if it wasn't for each and everyone of you giving of yourselves so graciously. We need more people in this world who are caring and compassionate...We love you all! You are all Purrfect !

P.S.
Our Mom always says…if you rescue one pet you are actually saving two. By giving one pet a new furever you are opening up a space for another pet to be rescued. PLEASE on behalf of myself and sister...please consider rescuing a kitty or two from Jim and Jan...there are so many more like us that are homeless and in need of a furever home. Together we can end homelessness and help give each pet the opportunity to live wonderful lives ...So what do you say...with the help of Jim and Jan , all the volunteers at For The Love Of Cats , all the strays in need of homes and each of you reading this...We can rescue each other!

With Purrs and Love,
Zen-Baci, Panthera and Family

Amazing group of caring dedicated animal lovers who direct every dime into the program. It's wonderful to know that a $ 50 donation can do so much to rescue and raise our kitties that don't have their forever homes yet. I wish every city and town, and homeless kitty had a group like this.

Thank you!

For the Love of Cats is an excellent organization for the welfare of cats. It is run by 2 extremely dedicated people who are truly concerned about cats. Their volunteers are also dedicated people who do a lot to make For the Love of Cats so special. I have adopted 2 cats from LOC and I'm so grateful for them. Jim and Jan are my go to people when I have a question about my cats, or their food. They always are there to listen and help.

If you are thinking of adopting a cat or kitten I highly recommend For the Love of Cats. I adopted 6 month old brother and sister in February of 2010. Love of Cats rescued them and they were looking for a home. I was looking for 2 cats. It was a perfect match. Jan and Jim have been very helpful whenever I have a question or need advice for my cats. They really love and respect cats and kittens as do their volunteers. I'm so glad they care so much.

I am so grateful to For the Love of Cats for taking in 2 abandoned kittens in January 2010 and bringing them to health. I was looking for 2 kitties to love in February 2010 and For the Love of Cats had just what I needed. Jim, Jan and their volunteers give their all to both felines and human beings. For the Love of Cats is THE BEST shelter.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Open up a branch in Naples so it would be closer to me and I could volunteer.

I got my 2 cats 3 years ago from For The Love Of Cats and it was the best thing I did. Jan and Jim were and still are available to answer any questions I have on my cats, even for emergency situations. Jan and Jim truly care about cats and kittens and go above and beyond in taking care and providing homes and advice to those who have cats and kittens.

It takes a village to rescue a cat & find a loving home for them. That is what the For the Love
of cat in Marco Island does so well. It takes a village of dedicated volunteers to give of their
time and share their caring hearts and give voice to the beautiful cats looking for loving homes. In return, these beautiful beings share their inner souls & wisdom with their human
companions.

I cannot say enough good things about this organization. My mom is a volunteer and I have been able to see all of the good Jan and Jim do through my visits to the shelter with my mom. Last fall, my family adopted two little boy kitties and they are the sweetest cats. I have just recently moved to Alabama and was able to adopt my new kitten, Claire, prior to the move. Not only is Claire an absolute joy but also, Jan made sure Claire and I had everything we needed before making the move. For the Love of Cats is an incredible organization.

Jan and her husband have hearts bigger than you can imagine! They have created the most amazing, no kill kitty shelter I've ever seen! I have a home in Minnesota and a home on Marco Island. I've volunteered on several of my visits to Marco and made donations every year. Their shelter is so clean and organized. Their kitties are taken care of with love and care. Their volunteers are dedicated and enthusiastic. I'm so thankful for their true 'love of cats' and willingness to commit much of their lives and resources to finding forever homes for kitties or keeping feral cats healthy, spayed / neutered and returned to their environment on the island. I only wish I could adopt dozens of kitties from For the Love of Cats, but currently, my 3 kitties fill our house with love! Blessings and thanks to you!
