PO Box 1940 Norfolk VA 23501 USA

The Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia was established as a non-profit clearinghouse for donated food in March 1981. Last year the organization provided over 11 million pounds of food to recipients through its 325 Partner Agencies and host sites.

The Foodbank relies heavily upon the generosity of multiple donors and volunteers to keep its warehouse shelves full. Manufacturer's productmislabeling, surplus commodities from restaurateurs, fundraising events, contributions from private citizens and United Way funds are criticalelements in an elaborate supply pipeline which keeps the agency in operation. The help received is essential to providing not only food, but other basic necessities to the area's poor. For the year ended 6/30/07, we served over 200,000 individuals, including 2,000 homeless; 42,000 elderly; 70,000 children; and 86,000 working poor.

I had the opportunity to volunteer here several times with my family, which was a wonderful way to allow young children to participate in community service and volunteerism. The program is run extremely efficiently, and I was impressed with not only the volume of food they have moving through there, but with the variety of programs they have implemented to get food to the people who need it.

The foodbank does not provide clothing. The Foodbank distributes food only...Fridays 9am-11am. The General Public is given a list of numbers to call for a Food search. The Foodbank is not open to the General Public for food other than the hours listed about.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Diverse and ill informed..Does the staff of the Foodbank truly understand the mission statement.
