Mission: Florida scholastic press association (fspa) is comprised of more than 300 student publications, online media teams & broadcast programs throughout florida. The primary aim of the organization is to educate, train, & support scholastic journalists & their advisers. Fspa believes that the responsible exercise of freedom of expression involves adherence to the highest standards of journalism. Students and advisers have an obligation to learn and practice the legal and ethical responsibilities expected of journalists.
Programs: A state convention was held in april to provide training for student journalists and journalism teachers and to recognize student and teacher accomplishments. During the fiscal year ending 6/30/15 approximately 1,330 attended.
the organization provided critique services for members and provided guidelines on how to improve their publications. During the fiscal year ending 6/30/15 about 162 yearbooks, student publications and online broadcasts were critiqued, as well as 2,419 individual contests.
district directors conducted workshops to provide journalism instruction for students and advisors. During the fiscal year ending 6/30/15 approximately 2,113 people attended the workshops and 331 contest entries were judged.
the organization awards scholarships to student journalists to encourage education in journalism. The organization has an endowment fund whose revenues are used to help fund the scholarships. During the fiscal year june 30, 2015, 30 scholarships totaling $6,100 were awarded, and the organization contributed nothing to its endowment fund.
