FAMILIES FOR EFFECTIVE AUTISM TREATMENT - HOUSTON

Rating: 5 stars   6 reviews

Issues: Disabilities, Education, Human Services

Location: 1120 Medical Plaza Dr Ste 100 The Woodlands TX 77380 USA

Mission: FEAT-Houston''s mission is to improve the quality of life of those affected by developmental disabilities by increasing resources and providing information about applied behavior analysis (ABA) and other scientifically validated treatment approaches, particularly applied behavior analysis (ABA).
Programs: FEAT-Houston hosts monthly meetings, conferences, network support and scholarship programs for parents, teachers and others involved with children on the autism spectrum. Topics address ABA practices, advocacy, and family support. Anually, FEAT-Houston sponsors 3 workshops called the ABC's of ABA--training parents, teachers and therapists in the essential elements of behavior analysis. FEAT partners with the Texas Association for Behavior Analysis (TxABA) to provide an additional 2-3 workshops entitled "The 123's of ABA" which provided further training. FEAT-Houston believes it is important for Houston teachers and therapists who are interested in furthering their knowledge of Applied Behavioral Analysis to have the opportunity to do so. FEAT-Houston has awarded scholarships to parents, students, teachers, paraprofessionals, and therapists. Because FEAT-Houston is dedicated to improving resources which will benefit our community, scholarships have been awarded for a variety of different educational opportunities, including: Texas ABA state conference, National ABA conference, ABCs and 123s of ABA workshops, conferences by nationally-known behavior analysts who work with individuals with autism, and college course work in applied behavior analysis (UofH and others). FEAT-Houston publishes a bi-monthly newsletter that goes to more than 700 people, operates an e-mail list of 1000+ members, a website www.feathouston.org and a phone line. These resources keep the community apprised of the many educational and support opportunities that are available.

I attended several interesting worshops with FEAT- Houston. FEAT give me the opportunity to improve my practise with children with special needs and to learn more about the principles of A.B.A. Thank you FEAT!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

By attending several workshops

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

more and new workshops for a generalization of the principles of A.B.A

FEAT has offered me and my family the phenominal opportunity to learn and implement ABA principals and programing into our home and everyday lives. In offering many sequential workshops and conferences throughout the year, they have helped us promote, generalize, and continue techniques that have been so successful in teaching both of our children affected by Autism. Their continual support and positive spirits have been a constant on our journey---and for that, we are eternally grateful!

When my son first started showing signs of Autism I was lost. I had little information on the disorder and no idea were to start or who to turn to. After finding FEAT and its wonderful resources I finally had a starting point. I am only 1 yr into this life long journey, but feel I am finally in a good place. I have attended 3 work shops and feel so confident and in charge of my sons progress. I have even meet another mother through the classes and keep in contact with her. It’s wonderful to know we are not alone and to relate to another mother with the same battles that we are going through. None of this would have been possible if it wasn't for Feat.

I have been working with children with Autism and their families for over 16 years. I have watched as FEAT evolved over the years from being primarily a parent support group to one that helps families learn about autism and what other families are doing for their children. They have reached a point where they are able to assist families in educating themselves on how to help their child. This is especially relevant since ABA therapy is one modality that has the most scientific support for intervention but also comes at a high cost. When parents take ownership and learn how to implement the principles of ABA into their everyday routines, they have a much better outcome for their child. FEAT has provided a venue for parents to take this step in their child's development.

My interactions with parents I have worked with and known that have availed themselves of the trainings, workshops, and conferences is evidence of the great work FEAT does. Parents feel so much more confident in their ability to help.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Increase funding for their services. Too many families still don't get this level of support.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

thier openness and willingness to help families

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

dedicated, caring, and sincerly willing to help.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

reach so many more families

Ways to make it better...

NA

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

lack of funding

One thing I'd also say is that...

They are growing but still limited in the areas they serve. Some families have a long drive but for a volunteer group they are exceptional.

I love FEAT! They have really helped our family learn, on a budget, the fundamentals of ABA that have helped us become our son's primary therapist providers. PLUS, it's allowed us a chance to network with other families like us. It's great to know we are not alone! GO! The services are mostly low cost or free, there is no reason NOT to go and learn how to relate to your child!

This organization has really helped me learn the ABCs of ABA on a budget. If not for the trainings, I'm not sure, I'd be as great of a home therapist for my son as I am now! THANK YOU FEAT!

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the chance to attend very valuable trainings.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

The staff are BCBA's and they are amazing! The volunteers are mostly parents, but, the people teaching the classes are the people that I want teaching my son. So, the next best thing is teaching me to teach my son! THANK YOU FEAT for bringing us togeth

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

train all of us and maybe even send some of our kids for free ABA training with some of the great organizations in Houston!

FEAT does many workshops annually in the Houston metro area, and I've attended serveral. All have subject matter experts who speak to parents in layman's language and given me information, ideas and support I needed badly.
