EPDA has been one of hte few independent associations from the American Diabetes Association, serving the needs of El Paso residents. What impresses me the most is how much they accomplish with just a small staff and a small building. Seeing from the outside in, as a person with diabetes, I can say with confidence that they are the sensivive pulse of the people with diabetes. The gamut of what they do is awesome, extending from screenings all over the area, to camps, to cooking classes and support lectures, to research, in order to sustain their independent status with constant fundraising projects and education for professionals.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I have participated in many of the classes, support lectures, Ask the Expert column, fund raising events, screenings, camps, etc.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Help them get a larger building and more staff to do more great work.

The El Paso Diabetes Association is a very active service organization. The director and staff are always in search of new and innovative ways to serve their community and fulfill a mission they take very seriously. As an agency they are a great team player, and make the El Paso service network more effective and efficient because of their presence.

My business partner is diabetic and he received assistance from EPDA when he was first diagnosed. They helped him learn to cook and plan menus so slow the progression of his disease.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Help them obtain more money so they can provide more services to prevent and manage diabetes.

This is such a wonderful organization! I have great respect for the staff of EPDA and the director. They do so much for our community in creating awareness and education for us here in El Paso from their camps to their cooking classes. They are so important to our community as a good majority of El Pasoans are affected by diabetes.

My father is diabetic and I previously had gestational diabetes. There is so much to learn in order to manage it properly. Through the various programs, I have become more educated in the matter and really opened up my eyes to see how many of us are affected by it.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I would like to see them brag a little regarding all of their accomplishments to this community. I also would like them to publish more of the symptoms for people to recognize at the onset of diabetes.

EPDA provides many services for people with diabetes in the area. They have diabetes educators who understand and know how to teach patients and ways to address their barriers. This organization has been helpful in engaging the public to raise awareness of diabetes through events such as the diabetes walk. They have also been very helpful in engaging physicians to address diabetes and understand clinical care guidelines. Great group!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

reaching underserved patients with diabetes.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

incorporate community health worker models in their structure, especially since EPDA counts on certified diabetes educators that can provide oversight to a core team of community health workers. This would help EPDA reach more communities and underserved areas.
