Community Initiatives

Issues: Civil Rights, Children & Youth, Philanthropy

Location: 354 Pine Street Suite 700 San Francisco CA 94104 USA

Mission: Community Initiatives enables individuals and groups, working together, to create and invest in projects that benefit the public. We do this by providing fiscal sponsorship and financial, human resources, and grants management services. In 1996, The San Francisco Foundation found itself inundated with nonprofit projects requesting its fiscal sponsorship. In response to this need - and recognizing that the nonprofit sector would benefit from a structure that allowed community-benefit projects to incubate their ideas before taking on the rigors of incorporation - the Foundation launched a new 501(c)(3). Since its inception, Community Initiatives has sponsored more than 160 projects throughout California and received more than $115 million in donations for their support. Today, Community Initiatives has 90 active projects, a budget of $20 million (most recent audited), and 90 employees and 300 independent contractors working across the state, with a focus on the San Francisco Bay Area. These projects operate in all areas of nonprofit endeavor, including arts and culture, education, environment, health, human services, and public affairs. Community Initiatives continues to grow and expand its service to great ideas in the nonprofit sphere.
Target demographics: incubate ideas that benefit all sectors of the nonprofit endeavor.
Geographic areas served: All California, mostly Bay Area
Programs: We're a fiscal sponsor organization. We enable individuals and groups, working together, to create and invest in projects that benefit the public. We do this by providing fiscal sponsorship and financial, human resources, and grants management services.

The Diabetes Hands Foundation was Model-C fiscally sponsored project of Community Initiatives for a number of months, during our 2009-2010 Fiscal Year. The service and value we received from the CI team was amazing! Since we first learned about them, I have done my best to promote their great work for Bay Area-based nonprofit projects, since more people need to know about this way to do good without having to be a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

two ways: through a project that we received a grant for, which was designated to be given to a 501(c)(3) nonprofit; and through our fundraising campaign in September 2009.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

make their work known to as many people as possible. What they can do for groups seeking to help others, thinking that the only way is to become a 501(c)(3) could result in thousands of hours and dollars saved and more people getting helped sooner.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The people: they are most personable AND knowledgeable, making working with them a joy and a great experience.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Phenomenal!!! From Prudy who rocks as an Office Manager to Ani who is amazing on-boarding and helping new projects learn the ropes all the way to Melanie, the CEO!

Ways to make it better...

I had known about them before we had gone through all the work we went to become a 501(c)(3). :)

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Marketing themselves more to the sector.

One thing I'd also say is that...

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

About every six months
