The Children''s Shelter of Blackstone Valley was founded in 1979 to provide emergency shelter and care for boys and girls up to the age of twelve who have been removed from their homes for their own safety. The shelter houses eight children at any one time, and has cared for over 1,500 children to date. In addition to housing, clothes, and nutritious food, educational and recreational activities are provided for each child. Emotional support and encouragement is provided in a warm, home-like setting.
All of the children who come to need emergency shelter have been traumatized by their negative experiences - by the abuse that they endured, and by the separation from their families. The expectation is that each child will remain in the shelter for a maximum of 45 days, but shelter may be needed for as little as 1 day, or as much as 1 year. We employ two part-time clinical consultants to meet individually with each child and with small groups of children in order to help them to understand what is happening, and how to interact productively with adults and positively with their peers. Each staff member is trained in Behavior Management, Milieu Therapy, and Crisis Prevention and Intervention. This helps to ensure a safe environment with acceptable levels of behavior while the children are living in this group setting, while they are in school and in the community. Each child remains in the shelter until a suitable foster or adoptive home is found, the child is able to return home, or other suitable living arrangements are in place. Each child is kept safe, and is supported throughout this experience.
