Chabot Space & Science Center Overview
Programs: Chabot achieves its mission through a range of educational opportunities. Students learn from over 50 curriculum-linked science classes such as "Life on Earth" or "Mission to Mars" - a simulated space mission in Chabot's Challenger Learning Center. Teachers take workshops developed by NASA astronomers or become summer visiting scholars. Families touring interactive exhibits find the best way to launch a virtual mission to Mars. Young children create new planets in the discovery lab. First-time star-gazers observe the night sky through research-quality telescopes, assisted by passionate amateur astronomers. Highlights of Chabot's programming and services include: Science education for the public, reaching over 150,000 individuals annually. Programs include interactive scientific exhibits, hands-on science activities and compelling audiovisual presentations in Chabot's high tech planetarium and dome-screen movie theater. K-12 Student Programs, serving over 50,000 school children annually. Students benefit from curriculum-linked science classes as the cornerstone of a full day at the Center learning from exhibits, telescopes, planetarium shows and more. Teacher Training, providing professional development programs to 2,000 Bay Area teachers annually. Programs include open houses, lectures, workshops, and modeling of best practices in science teaching. Outreach programs to increase the presence of women and minorities in science. The Galaxy Explorers and Techbridge focus on low-income and minority populations that are underrepresented in science, math, technology, and related fields, but will soon represent a majority in our nation.
