I am a past member of the board of Catholic Charities and always felt it was a most enjoyable and worthwhile volunteer experience and one I feel blessed to have been priviledged to do. There are, of course, a number of very good programs that help people in need be it financial,
emotional or providing knowledge, understanding or information. The attitude that I believe is one of the best assets of the organization is the focus by the board and staff in analyzing how they address their mission and what improvements and additions they might make to better serve the needs of southeast Texans. The advent of the two major hurricanes (Rita and Ike) that so impacted the region saw an expanded role for the agency - that of helping hurricane victims . They saw the need for more help and training for their own staff, found it and then built on that for post-hurricane service. For example, when
gift cards were being handed out a program in financial management
was established. It was so welcomed that it has been expanded beyond just hurricane victims but has broadened to help others who may not need direct financial aid but improved skills in asset management including establising and maintaining good credit.
Catholic Charities of SE Texas has grown and changed for the good of many of those served. I am proud to have been even a very small parat of that agency.

I am a professional fund raiser that worked with the Diocese of Beaumont in the past. I pay a lot of attention to how the funds are handled, in other words, how much is spent on administration and how much is being used for the cause. If I recall correctly it was a little bit over 5% which is the half of the regional average of 10%. This is proof of how well they manage their resources.

On the other hand, their goal is to serve the whole Diocese area which is from Corrigan, TX to Orange,TX; That is about 250 miles across. The chanllenge they have and I believe they need to improve is reaching out to the smaller communities. Most of their services are in Beaumont, Orange and Port Arthur.

Volunteering is good for the soul... we often benefit as much or more than the clients. Elijah's Place creates space for people to come together and share with others who feel their same hurt. Hospitality Center is doing God's work: feeding the hungry.

I served as a Board member for this organization and have also been a volunteer. The outreach is incredible in our community. Further, Catholic Charities initiated a prgram called Elijah's Place which helps children deal with grief. An incredible gift to the community.

My three daughters and I attend Elijah's Place. My husband, their father died almost two years ago and we have been going since that time. We have benefited greatly from the services. The facilitators are excellent and so caring. Elijah's Place is a place where we can go and be with other parents and children who have experienced the same loss that we have. The parent group is a strong, supportive community.
As a sidenote, I was on the original advisory council with Dean Terrebone that started EP. Now my daughters and I benefit from the service

I am proud that Catholic Charities provides services to anyone regardless of their religious affiliation. I am equally proud that they are a low-cost provider and strive to serve the marginalized. Having been part of the agency and network in the past, I have an appreciation for the challenges the staff and agency face with the aforementioned charge. Dispite economic and societal challenges, the staff and Board remain faithful and supportive. Catholic Charities of Southeast Texas has a reputation for being accountable and practice good stewardship in utilizing the resources entrusted upon them by their donors.

I have seen first hand how Catholic Charities of Southeast Texas works with the poorest of the poor by bringing together volunteers and professionals to address the root causes of poverty here in Southeast Texas. With one of the highest rates of poverty in the state, this area is in need of this agency.
