Mission: 826dc is a nonprofit organization dedicated to working with students ages 6-18 in developing their creative and expository writing skills and to working with teachers to inspire their students to write.
Programs: After-school tutoring- over the course of the school year, 826dc offered more than 130 after-school tutoring sessions for 87 students ages 6-18, averaging 35 students per day. 826dc offered homework help, writing and reading instruction, all free of charge.
field trips- up to four times a week, schools bring their classes to 826dc for two hours of high energy learning. During our most popular field trip, storytelling and bookmaking workshops, over the course of two hours students create, illustrate and publish a story sprung from their collective imagination. Each student leaves with his or her own published book, made on the spot with the help of our fantastic, multi-tasking tutors. This year we hosted 81 field trips, worked with 47 different dc public schools, and helped 1,866 students become published authors.
young authors' book project- over the course of a year, 826dc hosted a series of in-school workshops at the seed school of washington, in the ward 7 area of washington, dc. Partnering with an english/creative writing class at the school, 826dc joined the class for weekly workshops focusing on varying styles of poetry. The program culminated in the release of a professionally designed, edited and published book, titled everyone is moving, no one in place.
other programming expenses- includes in-school programs and evening and weekend workshops
