Mission: Boys & girls clubs of greater dallas enables all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.
Programs: The boys and girls clubs of greater dallas (bgcd) is proud to be celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2015. Over that continuous period of time, tens of thousands of boys and girls from low-income neighborhoods in greater dallas have benefitted from our success-centered programs and services. From the beginning of our first club in west dallas, we have grown to 14 local clubs (6 traditional club sites and 8 school sites) throughout the dallas metroplex offering year-round programming after-school and during the summer that serves approximately 6,000 dallas area youth ages 6-18 years old annually. 90% of memberships are from low moderate income households with 59% being african-american, 32% hispanic, 4% caucasian, 1% asian, and 4% mixed. Our gender mix is males 52% and females 48%. Our programs provide strong moral guidance, positive role models and life-changing educational programs designed to save kids from lives of crime and failure. Of members who participated in activities at least twice per week 74% had a/b average - 98% of were promoted to the next grade - 94% of members passed all classes in core areas. An example of our successful programs is the collegiate steps program that has continuously met the goal of 100% of senior participants graduating. In addition to college preparedness, we are committed to addressing the needs of those high school students seeking an immediate pathway into the workforce. Career ready is an incentive to stay in school and earn a diploma while gaining exposure to careers, pursuing certifications, or obtaining job experience that can lead to employment in high demand technical fields. With targeted programs and the support of the business community, we believe career ready can be that conduit into better paying jobs for our youth by equipping them with the personal asset assessment and technical skills that will allow them to be successful. To deliver these impactful programs is an army of dedicated staff and volunteers. Over 800 volunteers and over 40 collaborative partners from the corporate and non-profit educational sectors such as work-force, sanford brown and uta interns serve as mentors and tutors, coach sports activities, raise funds for scholarships and other projects, support events and help with building maintenance and repair. Boys & girls clubs of greater dallas is an organization that stands for traditional values, while providing progressive programs that address the problems faced by the youth of today. With a dedicated board of directors and trained and developed staff, boys & girls clubs of greater dallas has become one of the premiere youth organizations in the dallas area delivering transformational, engaging and impactful programs for youth in accordance with its mission of enabling all youth, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens.
My son attends the East Dallas Boys & Girls Club but I have had experiences with several of the other locations and feel that this applies for the organization as a whole.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas is a wonderful organization that strives to create responsible citizens as there mission states. The Club, as we like to call it, IS NOT A RECREATION CENTER. It is a youth development organization. They have fun, planned and structured activities for the kids. They help with homework, tutor, have music lessons, and provide sports. Their after-school care is so helpful for me because I am confident that my son will be doing something productive while there. I cannot not even begin on the summer program. It’s great! My son picked going to the club over a waterpark. He said he didn’t want to miss any days at the club. There are character building and leadership groups and I know my son is safe while he is there. They promote an anti-bullying environment and the youth can talk to the staff whenever issues may arrive. They are like family. The recognize and speak to you when you enter the club and care about the concerns that parents may raise. Many times my son is not ready to leave when I get there. It’s a one stop shop for positive youth development. It is wonderful. So much so that I became a volunteer! It is great to have an organization in my area that helps parents raise our children with a positive mindset. It’s not easy and it takes a village. I am proud to have the BGC of Greater Dallas in my village.
The Boys & Girl's Club (East Dallas location) permits an atmosphere of theft and lacks integrity and morals as well as breed an environment of irresponsibility, from the President, Charles English, down to his staff. There is no location of which children can store their personal belongings in the after-school program, but there is a Teen Monitor who is an adult present. Yet, both a cell phone and pricy athletic shoes has been removed from my son's book bag on their watch, while their monitor was present, and their response is 'too bad, we don't have the time to investigate and we don't care to, your son should have kept up with his things". They lied about the surveillance camera working (it does not, this was finally revealed to the Detective on this case). This President and its staff are incompetent in not only addressing this issue, he also lacks understanding and expression of the Mission statement of this organization overall and actually, his actions and behavior gives the Boys & Girls club a BAD NAME!
