Mission: Birthline is a christian-based organization providing education, mentoring, support services and referrals to anyone affected by an unintended or crisis pregnancy. We provide information about all options, while emphasizing positive alternatives to abortion.
Programs: Advocacy services/pregnancy options consulting: birthline is a life affirming, faith-based ministry that works with women and their partners who are experiencing an unintended or crisis pregnancy. All services are free. Birthline's services include pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, and pre-natal medical exams to confirm pregnancies; pregnancy options consulting, education and support. In 2014, 217 individuals received one-to-one pregnancy consulting and support, 37 requested pregnancy tests. Ultrasounds and medical exams were offered to all who needed it. The youngest woman served was 14 yrs old, the oldest was 50. Our nondirective and nonjudgmental approach allows women to investigate their pregnancy options in an environment that is safe, confidential and does not financially benefit from their decisions. Clients learn about fetal development and abortion procedures and risks through materials provided by the minnesota department of health. During initial consultation, advocates provide referrals to birthline's stepping stones program and/or other community agencies that can assist with necessary services. There were 1,195 community referrals for housing, food, comprehensive medical support, and other basic needs.
stepping stones (ss): the stepping stones program is an earn-while-you-learn incentive program which provides one-to-one case management services, education and material support to pregnant women and fathers, or those parents with an infant up to one year of age. In 2014, 292 individuals were served with 2,579 one to one mentoring sessions. Educational classes provided included prenatal health, childbirth education, parenting skills, budget and finance, life skills, etc. Class participation totaled 569. In exchange for participation in educational events, clients earn 'birthline bucks' to shop in our in-house boutique. Material goods available to support infants include cribs, car seats, infant clothing, diapers, safety items and general care; and adults care items include gas and grocery cards, personal hygiene supplies, etc. The total value of supplies distributed was more than $40,000. Ongoing program evaluations and surveys indicated that program recipients believe participation significantly helped them to reduce risky prenatal activities (drugs, alcohol, smoking), become better prepared for parenting, increase their family stability, and help them become increasingly self-sufficient.
h. E. A. R. T. (health education & relationship training) & emerge (college outreach): prevention of unintended pregnancies is part of birthline's vision. In 2014, parents, teachers and 1,652 middle and high school students participated in heart, our healthy relationship and abstinence education program. These presentations were held at 13 area schools and 2 churches. Overall, more than 70% of students rated the program as excellent, and 60% claimed that heart helped them to make positive decisions about their sexual activity. The emerge program was established last year to expand this prevention program to college students - initially made possible through a collaborate effort with the a&b winstrom's refuge program. A total of 1,744 college students received educational and personal support through presentations and one-to-one mentoring services. This is more than a 600% increase in service over the previous year. Mentoring topics include healthy relationships, the health risks of being sexually active and the promotion of sexual abstinence as the only guaranteed way to prevent pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases. All services are offered free of charge.
