I've been a consultant for a nonprofit organization associated with BFL for almost five years. I have come to the conclusion that not only is BFL at the forefront of what they do, the members, starting with the CEO, have a zeal to improve and build on the foundation of assisting a vulnerable population that has been overlooked in many areas of life.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

witnessing many of the clients evolve from ravaged caterpillars to beautiful, free butterflies!

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

There are no changes that I'm qualified to even suggest. They are the experts and are open to the refining that occasionally needs to be done.

I am working at Barrier Free Living as an OT intern. The staff is super warm and friendly. The director, housing manager, case workers, secretaries and other staff are dedicated to helping each resident to the best of their abilities. There is a feeling of friendship and closeness. There is a magic of rising above societal prejudices and viewing people with disabilities as meaningful members of society. The staff is a team that is ready to pitch in and perform various activities to help the other staff and to help the residents. This is a very special place, and I'm very proud to work here. BFL is giving people with disabilities a second chance to live life.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

seeing the residents learn skills, help each other, grow from meeting with staff and finding apartments.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

make attending a few OT groups a week mandatory

I worked at Barrier Free as a student social work intern from the UK for two months in 2010. The organisation looks at helping those individuals with disabilties to help themselves. The staff are helpful, and is managed by a great team who are good at what they do. The overall feeling at Barrier free is welcoming and accepting, and it really wants to try and make a difference to the lives of people with disabilties.

I recently interned at BFL, it was the best thing that I ever did. I was welcomed with open arms. I meet every department head and they explained what they do, how dedicated they are to each client, how they help everyone regardless of their disability. That really meant alot to me because I am disable, and it can be a challenge just doing basic daily activities. BFL is a wonderful place, very clean, and organized. In addition, the staff are a bunch of very special people.

Being an intern with a disability made me realize there are caring people willing to help.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I would make locations in Queens to serve the Queens residences.

I work for a non-profit which works with Barrier Free Living, and I can definitely attest to the professionalism, commitment, and genuine concern that they exude on a daily basis when trying to serve people with disabilities. They constantly are trying to utilize new ways to provide engaging and rewarding activities for residents while at the same time mentoring volunteers that share a common passion for they work they do.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

my everyday experiences at work. Our organization, in addition to working with BFL, also rents office space from them. Everyday I interact with BFL staff, clients, and volunteers and witness firsthand the great work that they do.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

make sure they get more funders. In this fiscal downturn, it is inspiring to see them continue to provide meaningful services to a medically frail community, all the while trying to defend their budget from various city and state cuts.

My story is about an Agency that has grown and addapted to the needs of the disabled people society has discarded onto the streets. This Agency is called Barrier Free Living there are 24 womens and 24 men that are all physically disabled and they all have different needs and it is our staff that work very hard to meet those needs. While in the process to meet the residents needs we learn and grow to better help the next person that comes to us. Barrier Free Living has been a net to many people catching them changing them to see that barriers can be taken down and that we as a community have the power to make the changes needed to show the world we can be great and live independantly. Keep strong and pursue your dreams you can do it. TRW

The residents have changed my life as I see the barriers and acknowledge the difficulties that disabled people go through on a daily basis and with the help of the Director of the Shelter, Ocuupational Therapist ,the Caseworkers, and the line staff. The residents can live barrier free while they reside there and advocate for themselves when they move into their apartment.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

The organization needs more funding to better support their staff and to provide a Director of Social Services to assist in the daily activities

I had the opportunity to recently attend a Disability Mentee Day session over at barrier free living on Tuesday October 12, 2010. The experience in meeting staff members and keynote speakers over at barrier free living open my eyes to possibilities of what career path on would like to pursue. What I found inspirational were the personal stories of the men and women who overcame their limitations due to their own disabilities, and work towards being successful into mainstream society not only doing what they love, but being able to make a difference in someone else life. I would say to anyone who has a disability or has suffered some personal challenge in their life. Organizations like barrrier free living who is making a moumental difference in lives of community. What is even more special is the caring dedicated individuals who want to see the success of its consumers strive and grow to become productive citizens of society. Chris W

I am working as a consultant at Barrier Free Living and I am incredibly impressed with the dedication and professionalism of the staff at all three sites. The Barrier Free Living domestic violence shelter is state of the art, an incredibly high-functioning agency that serves families in traumatic transitions with superior clinical therapy, superb child care and many other services. The shelter for homeless people with disabilities copes daily with clients under enormous stress, and provides services with grace and thoughtfulness. I have worked in many similar agencies, and I have not found any as well run or high functioning as BFL.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Seeing how clients are given services that change with clients' needs.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Hire social workers to help clients with individual and group therapy needs at the shelter downtown.
