Social interaction is at the heart of the human experience, but too many adults with developmental disabilities are living their lives in isolation, dependent solely upon caregivers to meet their needs. At Adults with Developmental Disabilities, Inc. (ADD), we provide the emotional and educational support the developmentally challenged need to have more socially integrated, self-directed, and ultimately, more fulfilling lives. The mission of ADD is to nurture personal relationships, positive work habits, and greater independence for developmentally disabled adults, eighteen years of age and older, while providing respite to caregivers and promoting acceptance in the larger community. With support, the developmentally disadvantaged can obtain employment, live in their own apartments or in supervised group homes, and learn self-reliance to build more independent lives.
Programs: ADD achieves its mission through the Social Services to Promote Greater Independence. The program has three major elements: 1) Discussion Groups: ADD conducts professionally facilitated two-hour discussion groups weekly in southeastern Pennsylvania. Members identify and resolve problems and address concerns about their friends, family, finances, and coping with people who do not understand what it means to be developmentally disabled. Members discuss health issues, social etiquette, employment issues, conflict resolution, how to access public transportation, safety at home, work, and in the community, and how to make good personal decisions to govern their lives independently. In addition to our professional facilitators, guest speakers including health care specialists, job coaches, and others are invited to share their expertise at group sessions where members learn about available resources, employment, and life skills. 2) Weekly Outings: ADD provides opportunities for members to socialize with their peers and participate in weekly scheduled cultural tours, recreational trips, and educational activities that serve to broaden their horizons. ADD staff works with a variety of educational, recreational, and cultural institutions like community theaters, art centers, restaurants, museums, zoos, sports venues, and parks to provide interesting trips for our members and to provide respite to caregivers. 3) Referrals: Members contact the office and receive assistance with tasks such as coordinating transportation, accessing resources at their county office of Mental Health and Mental Retardation, and general problem solving. ADD is the only organization in southeastern Pennsylvania that provides both support groups and a diverse array of activities on a weekly basis to help its adult members with developmental disabilities build independent lives.
