Arlington Outdoor Education Association Overview
Programs: The Arlington Outdoor Education Association operates and maintains the Phoebe Hall Knipling Outdoor Laboratory. The Arlington County Public Schools provides full time staff at the Lab. The Lab is located 35 miles west of Arlington in the Pond Mountains. Over 9,000 students participate in studies each year. Almost every 3rd, 5th, 6th, 7th grades and some high schools students make the trip every year. Each class has a field trip tailored to meet their specific curriculum needs. There are also camps in the summer where 4th through 8th graders have an opportunity to live at the Outdoor Lab for an entire week.
This 210 acre lab was purchased as the result of a need to have a safe unspoiled natural setting for the urban children of Arlington to experience hands-on environmental or outdoor education.
Over 9,000 students a year participate in a learning experience tailored to meet their specific curriculum needs. Sophisticated biological studies are conducted. Bees are studied. Weather is monitored. The students walk the streams and hike the trails.
An opportunity is provided to develop an understanding of nature.
