To make a positive difference in the lives of homeless animals by educating the community, encouraging responsible pet ownership and providing veterinary care and other resources to support the animals in the care of the tallahassee animal service center.
Animal birth control voucher program: spay and neuter vouchers distributed primarily by animal control officers. Goal is to reduce animal service center intakes. Approximately 450 spay/neuter surgeries are funded per year at $75 average cost per surgery. Care program: (fka vet visit program) special procedures and medications beyond asc budget or ability to administer. Goal is to ready animals for adoption and save lives of animals who would likely be euthanized without the vet visit program. Estimated 150 animals treated annually through the asf care program. Heartworm help voucher program: subsidized heartworm treatments for adopted heartworm positive dogs. Goal is to increase adoptability of heartworm positive dogs. Adoptions of heartworm positive dogs have increased approximately 40% since program inception. Shelter support program: asf provides funding for several rabies clinics each year to provide affordable vaccines to hundreds of animals in our community and for the hart and utopis programs which "graduate" 80 canines each year. Education programs: 1) doggie manners classes - low cost basic training classes for adopters with their dogs to help with integration into new homes with the goal of decreasing returns to the asc. Offered six times per year, with two instructors with capacity for 30 each time offered. 2) compassion in the classroom - 50 educators attended our first session. Our goal is to expand attendance and the reach of humane education into local classrooms with each offering of the session.

The Animal Shelter Foundation is an amazing organization. I have limited spare time on my hands, but the dedication of the other board members and volunteers has made me very enthusiastic about the cause. I started out as a volunteer helping to prepare their newsletter and based upon all the great work they were doing to help animals at our local shelter with medical treatment, training and other needs I was hooked. I became a donor and engaged participant in their fundraising events and other activities. I eventually became a member of the board and I can tell you from first hand experience the board members work hard and you can often find them volunteering to build beds, play with the cats or walk dogs at the local shelter. We try to bring creative events to our community that will improve the lives of animals including a recent humane education program for local school teachers. The Animal Shelter Foundation is a wonderful organization and when I travel for my "day' job I often talk about our efforts and people are so amazed and intrigued particularly those who are animal lovers that they ask me how we set up a foundation to support the animals at our local shelter. Our vision says it all- build a humane community where all animals are cared for in healthy homes and all citizens practice responsible pet ownership.
