AVIS has been around since 1894, preserving land and making it available for the public to enjoy. Without AVIS much of the 1,100 acres protected by them would be developed for housing or commercial purposes. This land includes meadows, forests, and wetlands that protect the environment and the plants and animals that thrive there. Thank you AVIS!

AVIS land has provided my family and me with endless opportunities to enjoy nature at its best within walking distance of my home. We have spent countless hours hiking the miles of well-maintained trails, cross- country skiing in winter, and enjoying the sights and smells of a wide variety of protected open space. It is a treasure that Andover residents will use for decades to come.

The Andover Village Improvement Society (AVIS) provides over 30 miles of walking trails in Andover that is open to the public. I am fortunate to live not far from the Deer Jump Reservation that extends for about two and one half miles along the south bank of the Merrimack River. This beautiful reservation is used by neighbors, people from nearby Methuen, and employees at lunch hour from the nearby industrial park.

AVIS is one of the oldest conservation associations in the US, founded in 1894. I love to walk and there is no better Town to walk in than Andover, due in large part to AVIS and the land it has preserved. An all volunteer organization with Trustees who each assume responsibility for land management, land acquisition, fundraising, communication and/or anything else that must be done to sustain this wonderful organization. A volunteer warden assumes responsibility for maintaining each reservation and 1000 members both enjoy the reservations and provide financial support. The website www.avisandover.org was designed by volunteers. Check out AVIS website and come walk our trails.

AVIS is one of the great hidden gems of Andover, providing well maintained hiking trails on reservations both large and small throughout the town. In conjunction with town conservation land, state parks, independent school land and other land trust's reservations, AVIS has kept Andover truly Green before that was a marketing tag line and has protected the open space that attracted many residents to the town in the first place. With over 1000 acres of land under management and more than 100 years of conservation history, AVIS has become an enduring thread in the town fabric. I hope anyone in the area will take a walk through the woods, along a river or in one of the meadows that make up AVIS reservations.
