Address:

200 N Vineyard Blvd Suite 700 Honolulu HI 96817 USA

Mission:

Aloha united way strives to build a stronger, healthier community by partnering with business, labor, government and nonprofits to deliver measurable and sustainable solutions to our community's most critical problems.

Programs:

Community support: we address the greatest needs of our community, offer hope, and provide opportunities for a better quality of life. Through community-wide fundraising, we help amplify the power of each gift to make a difference. Continued donations provide keiki with the best possible opportunity to succeed in school and life, help break the cycle of poverty in families and assist our elderly so they can age gracefully. This funding is used to provide services that touch the lives of over 830,000 individuals and families. Our volunteer councils review and fund programs in education, poverty prevention and safety net services.

combined federal campaign: auw, as the principal combined fund organization for the hawaii pacific combined federal campaign, organizes the campaign and disburses funds to agencies that qualify under federal regulations.

211 program: 211 is a free, confidential service offered statewide for people who need help. Each year, we connect over 40,000 callers and help them get the support they need from thousands of non-profit services. 211 provides information on a broad range of health and human services for the whole community including job placement, child care, and summer camp information, as well as basic food, shelter, crisis and other needs. 211 is also the number to call when people want to donate goods or volunteer in the community.

This is a great organization to donate to. They are able to allocate the funds to specific areas to assist the people of Hawaii. If you prefer, you can even designate which non-profit agency receives 100% of your donation. I've been giving to AUW for over 20 years now!

You should analyze their form 990 to see where the money goes, how it is spent, and where it is wasted. I was a long time donor until someone showed me their taxes. I no longer donate to Aloha United Way. An example is their Society of Young Leaders activities which breaks even and doesn't profit. SYL should focus less on social activities that benefit themselves and focus on the community which is what they get paid for. Tax info is public information and the public should look at it to assess overall management of donations. I give monies directly to programs and avoid these non-profits.

Get people experienced that are motivated by community needs and not personal gains.

I believe that Aloha United Way used to be a good organization with a solid foundation, good leadership, and a strategic vision for its future. Under its current leadership, however, AUW has foundered. It has lost some major corporate donors, and most likely it will continue to lose major sponsors, to the point that I fear it will no longer be able to sustain itself as a non-profit.

To any individual considering making a donation to AUW, I urge you to take a closer look. AUW cannot tell you how the funds it raises are really helping the community. You will be better off donating directly to the charity of your choice rather than giving it to an agency with such a vague mission and an eroding support base.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I worked at a non-profit in Hawaii that has worked closely with Aloha United Way for many years.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I would change its leadership. The current CEO does not have the energy, foresight, knowledge, or motivation to keep Aloha United Way afloat.
