I spent 2 weeks in Uganda this past June with a group from Austin, TX. We partnered with ARM to begin implementing their model in Pader, Uganda. By their "model," here is what I mean: ARM partners with western churches to renew villages in Uganda. Step one is the foundation, a chruch led by an ARM trained Pastor or two. Step two is to build and staff a school for primary/secondary education. Steps three is an orphanage. Some of the ARM supported communities also have Medical Centers. ARM does an incredible job of visioning throughout all of their efforts - with everyone having the same goal: to transform Uganda with young, Christian leaders. Self sufficiency is a long term goal, with the understanding they cannot get to that goal without assistance, as the need is too great currently. The men and women who lead ARM demonstrated great vision, impeccable integrity and great deal of love for their country and fellow Ugandans. They have a deep desire to meet the accountability expectations of those who assist them, but I would note that there are SIGNIFICANT cultural differences that affect perceptions on both sides. Regardless, they have a US based board of effective leaders who are helping ARM leadership understand the accountability/transparency needs of a western contributor. To be clear, their cultural differences are ones we could learn a great deal from! I have started supporting this organization in many ways, and endorse their efforts and integrity without reservation.
