Want to volunteer or intern at a great New York City nonprofit? Whether you’re new to NYC, trying to change up your routine with some local charity work, or just want to volunteer or intern at a community not for profit, everyone knows that the best way to find the right place for you is from the people who’ve been there!

Here’s a list of volunteers’ and interns’ favorite New York City charities. Every organization on this list has earned an overall score of 4 or greater out of 5 on GreatNonprofits.org, and must have been reviewed by at least 5 volunteers. If your favorite NYC non-profit or volunteer gig is missing, find it on GreatNonprofits.org, write a positive review, and show your co-volunteers how to start adding reviews and get it on the list!

Wild Bird Fund 1234.444445
“Out of all the centers I investigated to volunteer at, the WBF impressed me as the most well-organized, clean, and professional. Since starting there I’ve only had that impression confirmed. Every animal receives a quality of care that most professional veterinary clinics would be hard-pressed to provide.”

Chashama 1234.896555
“Volunteering has turned out to be one of the best decisions that I have recently made, as I have immensely enjoyed attending their events as well as meeting their enthusiastic staff and fellow volunteers, whom are so dedicated and committed to the cause.”

Chemo Comfort 12345
“My first time volunteering for chemo comfort I was hooked! Not only was the company of the other volunteers so enjoyable, but it was obvious what a thoughtful and necessary service they were providing. ”

Arts For All 12345
“It’s such a blessing to have been able to help out for so many kids who just need to know that they are loved and that they can do anything they want in their lives. They’re a great organization and I recommend them to anyone who wants to volunteer.”

Global Autism Project 12345
“The SkillCorps Kenya trip was one of the most meaningful and impactful experiences of my life. I have memories and a new group of friends that will last a lifetime! For those looking to do international work that will make a meaningful difference, I highly recommend the Global Autism Project and SkillCorps!”

Business Council for Peace 1234.928575
“The staff at Bpeace is stellar. The organization is run like a business–efficient, effective, and proven. They are honest and communicative and it has been my pleasure to work with them. ”

Friends of Renascer 12345
“I had the pleasure to meet the amazing people who work there, and can attest that they are passionate about what they do. I strongly recommend this NGO for its ethical values, accountability and passion to execute its impactful mission.”

InMotion 1234.965
“InMotion has by far been my favorite organization to spend my summer volunteering at. Everyone who works there is there because they want to be, which provides for such a warm atmosphere.”

Foundation for a Drug Free World               12345
“This experience was awesome! I met so many people. A man that made a pledge was doing so because he put his wife on psych meds and he said it was a big mistake. She is not on the meds now and he said that what we were doing was very important. He actually changed after taking the pledge. Best experience ever!”

LitWorld 12345
“After interning I have not stopped bragging about the organization. The duality of my internship introduced me to both the administrative side of LitWorld as well as engaged me in the organization’s physical mission of promoting literacy. Its staff members truly believes in the organization’s purpose.”
