Announcing the 2009 Indiya Shine Awards!

In honor of Diwali this year, we want to know, which nonprofits are making a difference in India and in Indian communities abroad?

During the Indian festival season of ‘Diwali’ – September 20th – Oct 20th, the small, medium, and large organizations with the most positive reviews will be featured on GreatNonprofits, GuideStar – the premier site for philanthropic research on the Web, and Little India – the largest Indian overseas publication in the US, with exclusive editorial content.

The contest asks clients, donors, volunteers, and board members to write reviews of these nonprofits. All reviews will be automatically visible on GuideStar.org.

There is no better time to give back and all you have to do is write. Plus, everyone who writes a review is eligible to win great prizes!!

So spread the word about the 2009 Indiya Shine Awards and show us how these nonprofits shine!

For 9/11 Day of Service: GuideStar, VolunteerMatch, and DoSomething Join In!

This year, in honor and remembrance of the amazing people who stepped forward in service during the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, we're all thinking about how we can step forward and devote at least this one day to service.

We've partnered with GuideStar, VolunteerMatch, and DoSomething to say: Don't just volunteer at any nonprofit... Volunteer at a GREAT nonprofit!

Now in the thick of the 2009 Youth Thrive Awards, GreatNonprofits and our partners are urging everyone to volunteer for great organizations that serve youth, and to write about them on GreatNonprofits.org. Some words from our rockstar partners:

"DoSomething.org is all about empowering young people to volunteer, and we want to connect them with great opportunities anyway we can," says DoSomething.org CEO Nancy Lublin. "Finding trustworthy nonprofits can seem daunting, especially for a teenager. Hopefully this site will alleviate that stress."

“Charity reviews answer the most important question you can ask about a nonprofit: ‘How well does it accomplish its mission?’” notes Suzanne Coffman, director of communications at GuideStar. “Financial ratios, such as how much money goes to programs, really don’t shed light on this crucial question. We’re proud to partner with GreatNonprofits to help people identify the most effective charities.”

What are you doing tomorrow for the National Day of Service? How are you honoring those that served so courageously after Sept. 11?

Tell us about it, and join us and our partners in the Youth Thrive Awards.
