The Founder and Chief Executive Director, Frances Wilson, will continue the 14 year legacy of the East Bay Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers, with a newly appointed Executive Director, Jonathan Smith, who has an engineering background, and is fully committed to the goals, activities and outcomes that increase proficiency in numeracy and literacy for the demographic served by East Bay NSBE's Saturday STEM, Khan Academy and Robotics Program. Since its launch on August 6, 2005, almost 15 years and 25,000+ underrepresented, low-income Girls, Black, Brown, Mixed Race and other Diverse youth who reside in the Bay Area that primarily did not know much about engineering and computer science.

Mrs. Wilson is very compassionate about reaching this demographic, providing science, technology,, engineering, mathematics, literacy and numeracy experiences, along with FIRST Lego League and Multi-FPV drone robotics workshops that can lead to STEM careers.

The costs of the Programs in the Bay Area can range from $50 for a two to three hour "exposure" to STEM, up to $2,500+ for a summer robotics program, which is out of reach for East Bay NSBE Jr. Chapter Members and their Family. Until this group reaches parity, this work must continue. More than 40% of East Bay NSBE Jr. Members who successfully matriculate through the Program, attend colleges and universities successfully earning a degree in one of the STEM disciplines. Please support this amazing, award winning Program. See them on Benevity, GuideStar, Candid and www.EastBayNSBE.org

The Woolly Mammoth Lodge is a group of great guys. Yes, that means they are a fraternal order, sorry ladies - I'm sure that they would be happy to accept a sister club / organization if one were looking to start up. these guys gather for socials on Tuesdays - except for the first Tuesday of the month where the club business meeting is held. The primary business of the club is to find creative and fun ways to serve the community and raise funds to give to graduating High School students of Pittsburg High School scholarships to help with the cost of education.

The organization does great work and has fun doing it. I've volunteered in the beverage booth at the Pittsburg Seafood Festival for the past 2 years ('09 & '10) and had a blast - I'll continue every opportunity I get. I've also helped out as a volunteer at the Dublin Fun Run for the organization, putting out course markings at 4:30am doesn't sound fun, but with the guys it somehow still is. I've done other odds and ends type volunteer work, providing event security for other non-profit functions and helping with parking at local concerts and events to benifit the Pittsburg Creative Arts Building restoration project.

The lodge also puts on a golf tournament in October - that I just play in, it was also a really well run tournament with a nice dinner afterwords at the Discovery Bay Country Club. Entry is reasonable and the guys that volunteer to run the tournament are great hosts.

The lodge is basically a Gen X version of the Lions & Elks - there are younger and older members, but the bulk of the group membership consists of 30-40 year olds.

If you are looking for a good group of guys to connect with that want to give back to their community, you should look up the Woolly Mammoth Lodge.
