I cannot speak to the "balance sheet" of "High Country News," but I can tell you that, as a resident of Nevada (one of the 11 states upon which the magazine is primarily focused (the 11 being: Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington & Wyoming))......it is the ONLY magazine to which I've ever subscribed for which I eagerly await the next issue. I would say that High Country News (HCN) has a "lean" toward issues of environmental import, but that only scratches the surface of what the magazine covers. Even though I definitely am more on the "left" side of things (myself), I am constantly impressed at the degree to which HCN presents both sides of an issue. (And I have absolutely learned from that balanced approach.) I would say that, for a person who lives in "the West," in the contiguous United States, there is absolutely no more important publication to which you could possibly subscribe. No other magazine, ever, has made me feel like, "This is worth every penny I pay for it...and then some." In fact, that is why I'm making an extra contribution: The magazine is so important (to me) that their regular subscription price is really too low. Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy......if you do, I'm confident you'll be a long-time subscriber. It really is that good and that important. To summarize, I view HCN as sort of a "National Geographic" that is specific to the American West. I think it should be a must-read for everyone in the 11 states concerned.
